Which AR-15 do you like best for around a $1,000 +/- ?

I have been seeing alot of AR-15 posts from people looking to buy one. Im in the same boat so I figured I post this poll, to help people get an idea of what you guys think about an AR around $1,000

Of the rifles I have owned: Colt, Bushmaster and Armalite at a distant third. You can't argue with the quality of Colt rifles except maybe the price. My Bushmaster was a solid rifle and was accurate, being a DCM rifle. The Armalite action was not as smooth as the others and lacked their accuracy. The Armalite was always reliable with the exception of the really old lots of WWB 556 ammo but the Colt ate it without a hitch.

If it were my money an LE Colt would be the next acquisition. I'm sure there are some other great rifles out there, but I can't comment as I have only owned those three.

Colt

I've said it before and I'll say it again....I've purchased many firearms and sold very few. When someone sees my collection, the Colts (AR-15, Delta, Anaconda, 1911 etc.) always attract the most attention and offers. I've fired (literally) thousands of rounds through my AR and haven't the first complaint....it is a true tack driver that asks very little of it's owner.

Question

I do have a follow up question. There seems to be an abundance of AR types available from most every manufacturer but few, if any, Colts. Evidently Colts are in higher demand or are their production numbers for the civilian market down that much? If so, is it because of defense contracts? I realize popularity isn't necessarilly a good measure of quality (reference Hanna Montana, Britney Spears or any other hyped narcissist).

Both. They no longer officially offer any AR-15s for consumer sale, and there is strong demand for the LE marked AR-15s which do make it to the consumer market.

I have a Bushmaster that I'm very fond of. I didn't have too much experience buying or shooting EBR's before that, since I'm mainly an old west firearms kind of guy. I was surprised at how many makers there were for AR15's, as well as the dizzying array of configurations, options and doo-dads.
Something for everyone I'd say.

you really can't go wrong with any of the ones that you have on the poll. i am personally a fan, and great experiences with bushmaster, i have shot and used many of them and different models too, as well i have owned 2 and they have been great.

a good bushmaster will be less that the 1k you specified, and that would leave some for a few pmags and such.

that check box poll that is pasted above is okay, but it dosnt include a lot of changes, and new firearms that have come out latly. the new charles daly m4lp is sopposed to e an almost exact copy of the colt 6920. so, it would fall into the catagory between colt and lmt, and i do not think that they allow the sale of the m16 carrier... the other thing thats not on the check list is a match trigger. but that is just my opinion.

built it yourself...cheaper, get what you want, probably will shoot better & the pride of building your own.

I chose other!

I wanted a colt 6920, but they are very hard to find. LWRC was my second choice, but the price combined with the waiting list didn't sound too promising.

I ended up buying a SIG 556! Piston Driven, 1/7 Twist, 5.56 chamber, no wait, and $100 rebate for Military/LEO/ or First Responders.

I know it's not an AR, but it's not a bad choice!

LMT. But note that they pretty much only have 16" w/ carbine gas system uppers as far as the normal uppers go. They also have a monolithic rail platform.

The other manufacturers listed all cut corners on their commercial rifles. LMT builds them near milspec, right close to Colt quality (notice that they are missing minor things like parkarizing under the front sight base, taper pins for the front sight base, double shielded hand guards, and an H buffer). But they do stuff like proper gas key staking, proper buffer tubes, magnetic particle testing bolts, etc.

Rock River cuts a lot of corners. I used to like them a lot, now I don't. They cut some serious corners. They don't do any of the bolt testing. That's the little stuff that matters to serious users. Bushmaster is very much the same way. Some manufacturers (like DPMS) seem to not know what a 5.56 chamber is, and their chambers are actually cut for a .223 chamber.

Colts are more expensive. And they are in high demand. I don't agree with Colt's politics, so I don't buy their products. Other manufacturers make 1911s and AR-15s, so I am not dependent on them.

Colt. Nuff' said. In reality though, they're all pretty much the same

Not all ARs are created equal, no matter how much someone will try to say they are. The devil is in the details. Most brands will work fine for a casual plinker, but when you are taking intensive classes or placing your life on the line, you would be smart to buy higher quality rifles and parts. I will trust any of my rifles in a fight, because I don't buy the lowest cost weapon available.

I'd go with the Charles Daly AR or an LMT for that price. Nothing else, except a higher priced Colt, Noveske, or similar higher end AR.
