For those you use your AR 15 for home defense how do you store it? Mag loaded but no round chambered? Round chambered? Mag loaded with bolt locked back? Or no mag loaded into rifle but close with bolt locked back.

i keep a chamber flag in the chamber and a loaded mag inserted.
I'd strongly recommend NOT using a loaded mag with just the bolt "locked" back as a gentle smack of the butt on the deck can easily "unlock" the bolt and send it home, loading a round. the flag prevents this from happening.
Another option would be bolt in battery on an empty chamber with a loaded mag. I don't like this because the assumption is that when you need it, you'll pull the charging handle to load it and that introduces the opportunity for short-stroking it under stress, causing a malfunction. I have been advised by people who should know, and personally prefer to use bolt release to charge the weapon whenever possible.

This is probably the way to go for most people, but I am fairly constantly diddling with my rifle, so that would mean constantly chambering and then making it safe. I don't like chambering rounds in the AR indoors because of the remote possibility of slamfires. (I have witnessed several, even some that to the best of my knowledge were not ammo-related) If you do choose this option, be extra double careful about rule #2

Bolt locked back but no mag inserted. I keep two 20rnd mags on a shelf next to it.

No mag inserted but filled and right above the rifle, bolt not locked back. So, yes, I'd half to insert mag, pull back on charging handle. Maybe I'll consider the bolt loack back.

Rifle well-hidden in one part of the room, mags and ammo well-hidden in another part of the room. Both are hard to stumble upon if you're not looking yet relatively easy to get to if necessary.

shotgun for in the house, ar for outside. dont want to shoot someone (good guy) through the wall. if you have to use the ar, half load your mags if being stored and use something like tap ammo but make sure you hit the right target because it wont stop any time soon. leave it epmty, it dont take long to load it. PRACTICE!

AR in safe...45 on my hip!
I don't have the AR ready for SD, but if I did, it would be condition 1 (like my primary SD handguns). I see no reason to have a defense gun otherwise. If you have little kids around, you just aren't going to be able to leave a loaded AR around so forget it.
