I'm trying to see if there is a law in illinois that you have to have a 16" barrel or if you can have a shorter one on a AR 15

Federal law says that any and all rifles must have a barrel or a barrel + brake/flash-hider of a minimum length of 16". Less than that overall total and you're into the same situation as full-auto regulations. BATFE paperwork and all that.

18" for shotguns.

Illinois under state law could possibly require a longer barrel, but it cannot allow a shorter barrel.

There are AR15 pistols, but those are a whole 'nother ball game. Easy enough to do some searching.

Illinois law does not allow for ownership of short barrel rifles even if they are properly in the NFA database with a tax stamp.

Sells, manufactures, purchases, possesses or carries........any rifle having one or more barrels less than 16 inches in length or a shotgun having one or more barrels less than 18 inches in length or any weapon made from a rifle or shotgun, whether by alteration, modification, or otherwise, if such a weapon as modified has an overall length of less than 26 inches; or
