AR accuracy

Quick AR question. Are AR builds as accurate as factory assembled AR's?

I own 4 AR's. 2 rifles 2 carbines. 2 factory 2 builds. No difference in accuracy. It is one of the easiest firearms to build and one of the most accurate semi autos around.

I will keep my words short and allow the pictures to speak a thousand or so words:

3 shots at 100 yards, using bi-pod, sandbags, sling and benchrest. Scope is a Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14X 40AO. DPMS LR-.308 AP4 w/steel upper, 18' AP4 barrel with match chamber:

Also, is a 24in barrel any more accurate than a 20in barrel?

No, but it will yield higher velocity, so it may be better for long range.

I was only able to muster this target last Saturday with my self-rebarrelled Compass Lake upper receiver (replaced barrel, front sight base assembly, gas tube, and BCG with WOA parts).

10 shots at 200 meters (218.7 yards). Slow fire, standing, unsupported.

The 10-ring is 7" on the NRA SR target, so that group is a lousy 4MOA give or take...

Seriously, custom built ARs (whether professionally built or self-built) are going to be better than the factory off the shelf ARs. Just use quality parts.

The straight answer to that is....it depends...

It depends on the components used for the build and the person building it...and the ammo they use.

Barrel length only affects sight radius...meaning its easier to aim a longer barrel....most of the time longer barrels are actually less accurate...benchrest shooters have known this for quite some time.

4 MOA offhand groups at 200m are pretty darn good shooting in my book, but they probably aren't a good indicator of what the rifle is capable of.

As I get closer to the purchase of my AR, I just thought I would bring this up again and ask another question. It seems that the 24" vs. the 20" as far as accuracy are the same. How about a 20" or 24" vs. a carbine length AR for accuracy?

Also, which twist will yeild higher accuracy with 55gr loads, 1 in 7 or 1 in 10
