I am in the process of putting together a heavy barreled ar-15 for target shooting off the bench. I dont want to spend a ton on a scope, but I dont want to get junk either. Im looking for something that will hold zero (obviously), CLEAR, 16+ magnification ,target turrets and a 30mm tube would be nice.
My goal is to spend less than $300. Suggestions?

I was thinking about the Simmons Whitetail classic. I have heard rave reviews of this scope. aparently its glass is atleast Leupold quality. I have heard the mildot reticule is overly large fo target shooting. Does anyone have one?

Vortex crossfire?
SWFA SS?

I have tried some cheaper scopes over the years.
They now all sit in a plastic storage tub, unused.
I only use Burris, Leupold, and Trijicon optics now.
They all still remain in use.

In that price range the scope that I've been very pleased with has been a Nikon Buckmasters 6-18x40 with side focus. I got mine on sale to get it below the $300 point but the 4.5-14 is in that range normally and the mil-dot version is on sale at Midway for $309.

That Nikon was the first decent scope I ever bought and I can't shoot with a cheap scope anymore. It's not the brightest scope out there, none of the Nikons are particularly bright, but it is clear and actually does pretty well in lower lighting conditions.

i have 5, 6.5 x 20 x 50 i think. they are all mil-dot, and the reticles and dots are bigger than usual.

i love um' i had 2, and liked them and bought 2 more for 2 more rifles, then bought one more for my sons rifle.

are they leupold quality? ive never had one, but probably not.

are they very clear at all power settings, hold zero very well, and deliver consistent sub moa?

yes they do.

i haven't really had much luck with budget scopes, but you could look for a demo/used one on samplelist.com and maybe buy a better one for less money

And once you decide on a scope, you'll need a good mount. Here's a pretty good resource for one piece mounts. :)
