I bought the Nikon P223 3x9x40 as a primary optic for my do it all AR to see if I would like the BDC type reticle and having never owned a Nikon I wanted to try one out. I used it this past winter coyote hunting with no complaints but I never got to use the BDC. I took it out today to do some ladder tests with two different bullets. I was shooting 100 to 400yds and the BDC set-up was spot on. The glass was clearer at 400 on 9x than my Bushnell 3200 elite 10x which is my favorite scope. I am no expert on glass but have used quite a variation of scopes and this is a good one.

Good report, do you have any experience with higher grade scopes like Leupold VX3's or Mark 4's? I have been thinking about the M308 scope for my new Savage Hog Hunter in .308 but I am up in the air. I have several Leupolds and they are super clear at high magnification. I have heard some less than stellar reports on the Nikon at high magnification and a Leupold 4.5-14x40 mm is around the same price.

Thanks for the review. I just got an AR and was researching scopes and the P223 was one I looked at.

What grain wt. and velocity bullets were you shooting? From an AR? What barrel length?

I got to use one on a 223 bolt gun. I only got to take it out to 200, so BDC wasn't a factor. Still, it seemed like a pretty good scope for the money. Good glass.

I have shot with a few of the Mark4 Leupolds and while I would not say the Nikon is as good it is well worth the purchase if you cannot afford the 1K for the Mark4.

I was shooting some reloads using 55gr Nolser Varmageddon BT and some 75gr Hornady BTHP from a custom AR with a DPMS 18in MK12 Barrel. I do not have the chrono readings from these loads yet, but will soon.
