I swear if I hear one more person call an AR15 high-powered, I'm going to lose it! It is so "high-powered" that it is not allowed for deer hunting.

I know we can't expect the general public to know these terms, but they get spoonfed the terms by the media and won't listen even when you know what you are talking about!

A lot of people confuse the terms "high powered" and "high capacity" out of ignorance or even wish, for propaganda purposes, to use them interchangeably.
While the 5.56 round is not a high powered round it is powerful enough to be a military round. The antis believe the scarier they make guns sound and the more they vilify them the better their chances at banning something. Make no mistake about it there is a movement to take away everything that goes bang one thing at a time

Anything centerfire is considered high powered. It is only illegal for big game hunting in 4 states that also allow modern centerfire rifles. There are a few more that do not allow it, but they are shotgun, muzzle loader, or in some cases straight wall case only. So yes, it is classified as a high powered rifle. Rimfire and muzzle loaders are the only rifles that are not.

When I was in the military, the 5.56 was often called a "22 on roids." Which diameter wise, it essentially is. In most states it is illegal to hunt deer or large game animals with.

The good thing about this woeful level of ignorance is if I hear a talking news head say "high power rifle" it was probably an AR.

High-Powered rifle has no real meaning except maybe center fire and not rim fire. The media chooses terms that sound scary to the uninformed. High powered, high capacity, semi auto, magnum, hollow point, full metal jacket, sniper rifle, assault rifle, etc. The words are not used do to ignorance, although they may be, they are chosen carefully with the intent of nudging the masses.

.223 is high powered for groundhog or coyote.

I have carried .30-30 and .303 Brit on deer hunts. While I know people who have taken deer with ARs, it was with the heavier AR bullets and precise bullet placement. If the AR is demonized as too high powered for civilian ownership, what about even more powerfull rounds in terms of bullet weight and kinetic energy, like .30-30 and .303 Brit? Cthulhu-ized?

My friends and family have certainly won our share of NRA High Power events (including F-Class) shooting rifles chambered in .223 Remington. I can't recall that we've won any with AR style rifles (preferring bolt actions), but there certainly are plenty of AR-15s on the firing line at NRA High Power events.

Actually, it is allowed and used in many states.

I believe you have that backwards. In most states, it is legal to hunt deer with .223/5.56. I believe only Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Virginia, Ohio, New Jersey, Washington, and West Virginia are the only states requiring a larger cartridge. The list is 3 years old, but I don't think 15 or 16 states have changed their laws in that time to disallow .223/5.56

I never considered the 223/5.56 as high powered rifle , as a kid we shot 30 06 / 44 mag / 357 / 45/70 / 45 acp / then when I joined the service and fired my first M16 I thought it was disappointing such a weaker round compared to what I was used too, I still feel it is just a 22 mag on roids , a fun pinker but if it does not yaw or tumble or frag it is just an 22 hole. There is now way I would believe the 223 out preforms the 308/7.62 as posted above but this is only my opinion and any gun can kill/wound to each his own but I do agree with the OP of this post the AR 223/5.56 is made to be much more then it is by the media
"the high power assault weapon" "AR=Assault Rifle" lots of wrong info by the media but thats what they do now a days

Oh come on folks we’ve all seen the trauma to the (wimpy left wing) reporter after shooting an AR.

He said the recoils was insane and the noise unbelievable.

So just ignore the video of the little girl firing one.

1) All center fire are high power.
2) Legal for deer in most states.
3) You don't know what your talking about so why would they listen to you.

When we talk "high power" for competition, that isn't what they mean. They talk like it is one of the highest power calibers out there, moreso than 30-06, .308 etc. The. 223 is one of the smallest rounds legal for deer where it is legal. Of all the CenterFire rounds, .223 is one of the weakest. My state is one of the states it is not legal.

If we talk to our friends like some have responded in this post, it's no wonder the leftie loons think we are gun nuts and won't listen to us. Never understood why we go after our own.
