AR15 side charging question.

Interesting to see this thread. I never thought about doing this with an AR. Does the extra slotted opening in the receiver open a gap for foreign material to enter or does it stay sealed against the bolt carrier?

The closest rifle I have is the BRN-180 rifle upper. I can certainly see the attraction. I have the Geissele super charging handle on a couple AR pattern rifles I have and that solves pretty much all the issues I have had with the charging handle. I can use it from either side and don't need to hit it in any particular way.

There's a tiny little gap in the top left of the ejection port where the carrier is cut but otherwise the carrier takes up the entire opening when it's in battery
