Are all Ruger BX-25 mags this fussy?

I have a statistically insignificant sample size of two magazines, both behave the same with identical failure states;

1; the round being chambered ends up jammed against the roof of the reciever, with the bullet often being "bent" upwards, some bends are minor and can be straightened and re-chambered, others are set aside for my boltgun, and some have to be tossed

2; stovepipe jams on ejection

These jams happen with all ammo I've tried* except CCI Velocitors, and they are far more consistent with lower velocity ammo, as the speed goes down, malfs go up

Both mag's run fine with Velocitors, 100% reliable

They both have seen very little use as I prefer standard velocity and subsonic ammo, the standard BX-1 10 rounders are flawless with all ammo

And yes, I have a KIDD aftermarket extractor installed, doesn't help with the BX-25's, I have also done the ".22 short casing over the slider spindle" trick, no change

Are the BX-25's always this fussy? Do they need a break in period? Am I just unlucky?

*i've used CCI Subsonic, standard velocity, Federal red box and blue box bulk, Automatch, Winchester 333/555 bulk, all jam in the BX-25's

My grand daughter has one for her standard (no modifications) 10-22 and it feeds all the .22LR ammo without a problem, might be the luck of the draw. I've got two 10-22's and usually just stick with the rotary 10 round mags designed for the rifle.

No problems with mine, with the note that I don't use 'standard' velocity ammo. Your story suggests that the problem may be with your gun. Maybe field strip and clean it? Possibility #2 - bad lot of mags? I'm pretty sure that Ruger farms out the production of all their mags. They had a real nasty problem with Ruger American Rifle mags awhile back.

I have not had problems with the two BX-25 magazines I bought in 2009.
Mostly I shoot PMC SideWinders, but I have used standard velocity CCI with no issues. When I do have a stoppage it is mostly a cleaning or lube issue. Taken care of by a thorough cleaning.
I have had more stoppages with the four, ten round magazines. They seem to get dirty quick.

I've used these mags in 3 different 10/22's, a 1974 carbine, a 2012 carbine and my current one, a 2014 Design Contest Winner, the BX-25 that came with the DCW appears to be of newer manufacture, both have the same issue

I'm not using the mag as a grip, I'm not resting the gun on the mag, nothing is touching the mag, I'm shooting either freehand or resting my left elbow on a support, and I keep the gun clean.

I'm leaning towards being ammo fussy, it seems to feed and eject Velocitors fine, it just has issues with the slower rounds

Time to pick up a few different ammo types and narrow down the velocity range where the issue occurs

I purchased two of these when I bought my 10/22 take down. One of them doesn't work at all with that rifle, the other one does. However, both of them work with my 1978 vintage 10/22.

I have never had a 10 round Ruger magazine fail to work flawlessly.

I got a BX-25 when they first came out and never really warmed to it. I never had a problem with it,just didn't like the look or feel of it sticking out of the bottom of the rifle. I ordered one of those 2 x BX-1 couplers from High Tower Armory and couldn't be happier with the set up. You have 20 rounds on hand in the always reliable BX-1s,and the set up extends only 2" from the mag well. Fire 10 rounds and flip ends for 10 more. I use one of those rubber Ruger mag covers on the exposed BX-1until time to use.

No. They work perfectly fine in my Rugers. Now my Flemming is another story. The old '70/'80s Ram Line mags are no longer sold and I've been modding one BX-25 to fit my Flemming upper. When life is going too well I like to restore the cosmic balance by trying to get the Flemming running. The modded BX-25 still runs fine in my Ruger, BTW :)

,I just went through this with my 10/22.

If you take a 10rd OEM mag and compare the "box" ( where it inserts into the magwell ) between a BX25 and the OEM rotary box ten round.. you will see why they are so fussy... the BX25 fits MUCH looser then it should.

You can quickly see why they are not reliable because of this sloppy fit.

I did a few things to help fix that....

One, replace your recoil spring and possibly your charging handle... both mine were really worn out. And honestly probably WAY over due for replacement... OEM parts are dirt cheap.... edit to add... I also replaced my ejector... again parts were dirt cheap.

Two, watch this video... I did this as well and was happy.

Three, I did polish, with a dremel tool, the inside of the feed lips and left ( YMMV ) side of the metal stack... I could see where the bolt was dragging on some brand new BX25's

I do not suggest trying to increase the diameter of the "box" on a BX25... doing one as an experiment made it so it would not function with any of my loaders.
