Are civilians allowed to buy Colt 6721 and 6920s ?

Yes, you can buy them. The restricted markings lost their meaning when the AWB expired in 2004. In fact, my local gun shop has two so-marked 6920's for sale right now for $1150 each. As long as they're semi-auto only you can buy one. Admittedly, I don't know much about which Colt's model does what but the point is the "LE/Government only" markings no longer mean anything.

Colt does not oficially want non LEO and military people owning their LEO marked firearms, presumably for liability reasons.

What the heck makes you think this?

Colt has never had a problem selling to Civilians. However most of their sales are LE/Goverment sales. I don't really see what the problem is with this.

There are *two* Colt companies now, even since the last bankruptcy.

Colt's Firearms Manufacturing is the company set up for "civilian" sales. They do offer a few "neutered" AR's with non-collapsing stocks and such.

Colt Defense is the *other* Colt company. They are set up for sales to the military and law enforcement. They are supposed to leave the civilian sales market to the civvie Colt company (Colt's Firearms Manufacturing).

Colt Defense makes the 6920 and other "mil spec" like AR's. Since Colt Defense is set up for military and LEO sales they sell directly to agencies and also directly to distributers. The distributers are "supposed" to only sell Colt Defense products to LEO agencies and individual LEO's, but Colt Defense does not monitor this very closely.

So, yeah, even though the AWB expired, the Colt 6920 manufactured by Colt Defense is "supposed" to be limited to LEO agencies and LEO officers only. That's why it retains the Mil/LEO markings. Can a civvie get one? Yeah, and it's not difficult. But, you may notice that Colt Defense does not advertise these rifles to the Non-LEO market.

I would say the fact that they stamp "Law Enforcement Only" on the side of the gun is a pretty good indication that they do not officially want this gun in the hands of regular people.

I understand they say "Law Enforcement Only" with a wink, and really are only covering their butts in case one is used for malice, but I have never liked that way of doing things.

They did that because they entered into an agreement with the gov. to end frivalous law suits. I wrote a paper on it in college.

Why is Colt so gun shy?? Have they been sued alot??
After Stockton CA shooting in 1989 AK 47s and the Colt AR-15 became the evil rifle poster child target of the anti gun people and news media.

I worried about the same thing. My 6920 purchase was no problem.
And it's a great rifle.
Now I worry if I am stopped by a LEO for any reason, and I'm on my way to the range, would he confiscate it? Who knows.

Not unless you were doing something illegal with it or were legally prohibited from owning it otherwise.

I think a police officer's reaction to a AR marked law enforcement only would depend on how knowledgeable his is of AR's and gun laws.

Nothing would ultimately come of it, but it is possible you might get held up until the issue is clarified.

Civilians are buying them like hotcakes here. And since Colt's M4 contract has expired I expect they'll ship more 6920's to 'civilian' gun shops.

"Colt does not oficially want non LEO and military people owning their LEO marked firearms, presumably for liability reasons."

Maybe so, but that is NOT the reason that label is on there.

That is on there because these guns were built during the AWB and
were required to be so labeled per Federal Law, not Colt's prejudice.

That label means NOTHING after October, 2004!

Even if Colt's kept marking their rifles like that after they were no longer required by law to it still means NOTHING.

It's the same thing when you buy a box of Winchester Ranger 127gr +P+ ammo...says law enforcement only right on the box, but it most certainly is not just for cops. That's a Winchester thing, not law.

I do not give a flying rat's ass what Colt's, Ruger, or any other lib-lovin' elitist gun maker "wants" me to have or have not. I'll buy whatever I want that I can afford!

B.S. like this makes me WANT Colt's to go under. Besides, there are others (Rock River, Bushmaster) that make something just as good (if not better) and those makers ain't a bunch of holier-than-thou buttholes.

Now if you personally think you may one day get into a hassel with an imbecile in a police uniform, do what I do: do not buy anything - magazines, rifles - anything - that is marked LE only. I never have, and I never will. I'm not saying all cops will hassel you but the fact is 1) most cops ain't "gun people" and only carry one because they are required to - outside their issue sidearm and mandatory quals they could care less about guns and 2) most cops don't understand the laws they're paid to enforce.

And there is that "Just as good as" lie again.

I don't get it. Colt sells to civilians through distributors just like all the other Manufactures. Where does this BS come from that says they don't want civilian sales? I had a DPMS with the same markings and I don't hear you yelling that they hate civilians.

Don't know. Used to work at a gun shop and I would occasionally see some marked as such. I don't care if they mark them POTUS only to be honest. I care about the actual business practice and as of right now that practice is to sell to civilians as well as LE and .gov.
