are mossberg 500 barrels interchangeable with 535

You can put 500 bbls on Mav. 88 receivers. In theory you could put a 535 bbl on a 500 or 88 receiver, as long as you used 3" or shorter shells. It would be like putting an 870 Super Mag bbl on a standard 870 receiver.

clarification

So using 500 barrel on a 535 receiver is OK, and using a 535 barrel on a 500 receiver would be OK if you used 3 inch or shorter shells. I just need clarification, I don't want to pass on bad info. My father-in-law asked.

The other way around. A 535 barrel on a 500 receiver is always safe. A 500 barrel on a 535 receiver is safe as long as 3" or shorter shells are used.

Both are correct.

The 500 bbl on the 535 shouldn't chamber a 3.5" shell. If you were to ram a 3.5 shell into the 500 bbl. it would almost certainly cause an overpressure condition, and the shell would almost certainly be stuck in the chamber if it was still intact.

Also, (at a minimum) even with a 535 bbl on a 500 receiver the bolt travel & ejection port aren't long enough to eject a fired 3.5" shell. You might could get a 500 receiver to chamber a 3.5" in a 535 bbl, but I've never tried. I don't even know if a 500 receiver with 535 bbl is safe to fire with 3.5" shells. I wouldn't try it.

Really? This is terrific news. I bought a 535 and thought I was limited as to what barrels I can use. I don't really need the 3.5" shell capability so I can get 500 series barrels, sweet!
BTW -
I also can't stand the gold trigger, do you know what is involved in swapping it out?
Thanks for this info -

NO!!

You have been given incorrect information the 535 barrels are not interchagable with the Model 500 shotguns.

Both shotgun barrels attach the same way with screw that attaches the barrel to the end of the magazine tube, but the magazine tube for the 535 is slightly longer than the one for the model 500...

Smitty, I stand corrected. If the threads on the magazine tubes are the same one could, in theory, convert a 535 to a 500 mag tube if he or she wanted to use 500 barrels exclusively on the 535 receiver. I'm also thinking a decent machinist could make a thread on spacer to allow use of 535 bbls on 500 mag tubes. A new 500 mag tube cost $30 from Brownell's. Mag tube replacement isn't that difficult to do yourself. If a 500 mag tube would thread into a 535 receiver, and a spacer could be obtained at a reasonable price it would likely be worthwhile to some users.

I have a mossberg 535 and several barrels for it meant for a 500. I am fairly certain that the limited selection of 535 barrels are all chambered for 3.5inch and under, whereas the 500 barrels max out at 3 inch rounds.

The barrel that came with my 535 is a deer slugger, it is rifled. This in itself makes the barrel a poor choice for home defense, or goose hunting as it disturbs the shot pattern to a slight donut.

Putting a 500 barrel on a 535 is no small task. Regardless of what derivatives Mossberg makes, a 500 barrel will need a 1.1x1.1 standoff (plus threads tapped in and die'd out, 7/16-20) to mate onto the 535's slightly *shorter* magazine tube. The threads on the 535 and 500 are the same at the nut. The magazine tubes are interchangeable to allow either choice of barrels, however most 500 receivers will likely not cylcle 3.5 inch shells properly (not that anyone is posting about converting in that direction).

I agree that the brownells kit is a much smarter choice IF you do not plan to use other barrels. Conversely, it actually makes more sense to have a few shotguns than to have a few barrels, with the small difference in price so those suggesting a mav88 are thinking ahead.

For me, I like the adapter I machined that allows me to put a 500 barrel for muzzle loading, or a HD 18.5 cylinder bore (3in max) on my 535. Converting my magazine would make my useless deer barrel uselessER. Lesson learned here, Buy what you need, not what is on sale (or know what you need, I did not at first).

PS
the referenced image comparing the 500 to the 535 seems NOT TO SCALE or possible named in reversed. Fact of the matter, is the 535 magazine tube sticks out less far than the 500, period.

PSS
heed chamber overpressure warning!!! Never fire a shell longer than what is stamped on the barrel!!!
