ARE OHAUS RCBS BEAM SCALE GOOD??

I have a chance to buy a RCBS beam scale made by OHAUS for RCBS but I would like to know if they are any good, what is your opinion? I have looked at it, it is used but in great shape. There are no model numbers on it, it only says made for RCBS by OHAUS. I know it is old but most of them work fine, I will take my RCBS weights and make sure it measures what it should. Let me know, he only wants less that $40 bucks for it, I think it would be a bargain???
I would buy it in a heartbeat. I have used several Ohaus scales for RCBS with great luck, and was lucky enough to find an original from the mid '70s still marked Ohaus, a 550. LOVE those scales.

I purchased an RCBS 5-10 at a yard sale in the late 80s. It's my daily driver, never had to recalibrate it to this day. It's the best!

s-l140.jpg I think it is a RCBS 5-10 cause it registers to 500 grains, has a level adjustable wheel for leveling to zero. No numbers on the unit, I say it is a RCBS 5-10 because it only goes to 500 grains. What do you think? Definatly not a 505 cause of the 10th grain wheel on the end of the level rod.

The picture is a 5-10. 5-10's and 10-10's have the same 1/10 grain wheel. Both great Ohaus-manufactured scales.

That's totally reasonable.... You might be out of luck with that one! Nice try tho.... I'd be interested to know what the asking price is.....maybe it's more than YOU want to pay, either....hard to buy just about anything in this economy. Could be a steal the O.P. can't resist......(reread the OP post.....less than $40! If the beam and cradle is good...way worth it.)

Update: I decided to check what was for sale at Ebay.......several 5-10's and even a 10-10. Heck! a brand new 5-10 in the box for $135. Used ones start at $50......was surprised.

No won't race anyone.....I have my 10-10 .... only need one. :) ....but less than $40 would be even awesomer.

He’s right here with his new scale ‘

I took all of your advise and bought it, Sorry, GDF, I though is was a great deal and I got it for less than 40 bucks except the pan had been damaged which I might have to fix since I have been a metal worker all my life, gives me something to do since retirement. Thanks to everyone here for their advise, great forum.

No problem. Glad you got it and I hope your buddy who sold it is happy with the deal, too.

Of course I am happy you grabbed it. You can roll your own pan or just Google " powder scale pans" and buy one. No shortage of pans and linkage out there to be had. I also get it with the retirement thing. Constantly looking for ways to amuse myself. Rumor has it if you don't keep busy with thought process your brain turns to oatmeal. Summers on the outdoor range and when the range becomes a frozen tundra there is the indoor range and reloading. :) Enjoy your new to you scale.

Just a thought - If, when repairing your pan, you add weight to it you will need to rebalance the beam. This is simply done by adding or removing weight in the weight box under the pan.

Ha! Ha! Speaking of brain mush and retirement......THAT'S why I bought a 3D printer.....solidifies the mush when learning a new process and tool......and boy it is fun, and even better....worthwhile....and the money saving keeps going. Never thought I'd own 5 bullet/case collators...too expensive.

Since you saved so much money on the scale you can add one of those and keep you from getting bored for years. ;)

Hey, 1066 I thought that just adjusting the wheel brings the scale to zero and level. What did you mean by re-balance the beam? It seems to me that no mater how much the pan weighs all you have to do is level the zero of the beam and its level and should read correct according to the weight. What does everyone think?? I would like to know if I am missing something here? Just for my information.

Hey GW Starr, I am not computer literate, about the only thing I can do is type and answer emails and forums, don't even own a cell phone that is too much technology for me to understand and I can read. I will stick with shooting and reloading and doing some small metal work when I get the urge. Being 76 my brain is already mush.
