Hey guys. im looking to buy my first snubbie. I would really like one with 6 rounds. However all the J frames have only 5 rounds and the colt detective special is way too expensive. Are there any other options?

Thanks

.327 Federal -- if you like being the first on your block.

Or move up to a bigger gun. You can get snubbies in many sizes, but they'll be bigger and heavier than a J Frame.

IIRC, my Aunt's Charter Arms snubby holds six. My Ruger Speed Six also holds six rounds, although it has a 2 3/4" barrel and I don't know if that really qualifies as a snubby.

Here's one with 8 rounds and a 2" barrel.

As AB notes, there are snubbies in larger frame sizes - an "N" frame snub isn't my cup of tea but surely someone bought one.

Taurus and Rossi both have snubbies in .357/.38 Sp. that hold six rounds. Mine is a Rossi 461. Some say they're poor quality, but I have never had any troubles with mine.

Yup - 327 specifically.
327

It seems a strange mix of old and new - in addition to being a (IMHO) strange mix of frame size and barrel length. It's got the lock, a crush fit barrel and a couple other nods to production expedience that some find distressing. But it also has a forged hammer and trigger, pinned DA sear and a Lothar Walther barrel (albeit a real short one). I don't know the specs on L-W's rifling but one thing for sure - it wasn't EDM'd; it's button rifled.

I have the pre lock 586 PC L-comp. It is a little stretch to consider it a snubby, IMHO. The thick 7-shot cylinder, and 3" ported barrel making it a range only revolver, for me.

Soundtrackzz,

When you say too expensive, what exactly is your price range, I may know someone that has a colt ds (ok me) that is for sale.

And you can usually find a colt ds on gunbroker used for less that a Taurus is new. You will find that prices have gone up on all new guns, and if a j-frame smith is in your budget than my colt ds is in your price range

Soundtrackzz, as neat as Colts are, they're collectors' items now, not guns to carry.

Aside from the collector price on the gun, if you need repairs, they will be expensive.

BTW this is a 686+ (.357 7-shot) with a 2 1/2" barrel:

What do you want from your snubbie, in terms of size and weight?

$400 will limit you to used guns, Rossi, Taurus, or Charter Arms. A couple of years ago one could buy a Ruger sp101 for about $425, I suspect its a little higher now.

S&W makes the Night Guard snubbies in .357 with 6, 7 and 8 shots, and makes the 686 and 686 Plus with 2.5" barrels.
