Are these AKs any good? I've never heard of this brand before.

Pioneer rifles are made in Poland, but imported by I.O. There have been many I.O. horror stories, so be sure your getting an actual Polish rifle and not an I.O build on Polish parts.

The one thing thats kept me from being interested is the lack of side rail for optics. In my opinion, thats a required item on any AK. With q/d mounts like Midwest Ind, it makes the rail a godsend.

Not to hijack the thread, but I am also going to add a link for another very smiliar model in here from AIM as well. It is one of the "entry level" IO Inc rifles that is most similar in looks to the pioneer arms rifle mentioned above.

I would be curious myself as to if anyone has had any experience with either the Pioneer Arms or the IO Inc rifle as they seem pretty similar on the outside...

I dont know for sure, but when I hear AK, made in Poland... I think of the Radom plant.... Which is a good thing.

These I.O.-imported Pioneer rifles are NOT made in the famed Fabryka Broni Radom factory in Radom, Poland.

They just happen to be made by another company in the city of Radom. They also have a cast bolt carrier, which is a little scary. There's plenty of info about these rifles over at akfiles.com, and most of the chatter isn't ever good.

Big write up in Shotgun News not long ago about IO moving, setting up new machinery, and putting it's past behind them. I had wanted to believe it but sadly, it doesn't seem that they have changed much.

Advertising is like propaganda. They wouldn't say they are reforming, an admission that discredits them, unless they had a serious issue that they wanted to address.

+1
I saw these were made in Poland and after a bit of research have come to the conclusion that buying a WASR or NPAP is a much better investment. A bit disappointing as Polish military production AKs have a reputation for being extremely well built. The bolt carrier on the pioneer is indeed cast and the american assembled AKM247 has multiple people complaining about poor riveting with the pictures to back the claim up.

When I read the title I knew this would be about the Aim rifles. If it doesnt have a chrome lined chf barrel you might as well pass there are so many others available.

Sorry guys, but if these are like the I.O. Hellcat I will pass. They are one of the biggest pieces of crap that I have ever handled. The castings are aweful. I am actually ashamed that I sold a couple of them.

I'd look elsewhere. What are you looking to do with your AK. Unfortunately now is not a great time to be getting into an AK like it is an AR. Knowing what you hope to do with it/why you want an AK will help in pointing to sensible choices.
