Are You a Contrarian?

I pretty much follow the latest fad. Picked up my 40-82 because with original loadings it gives me a two hundred foot per second edge over the Gov'ment 45-70 and kicks less. Didn't everybody?

I embraced cartridges. I embraced smokeless powder.

Some of the old timers will still slam a big blade down on the table, and insist that it's more reliable than any revolver, but I'm almost always going to go to the revolver first, but I'm going to have the blade just in case.

'Less I have a 1911. When John Moses Browning came along, I embraced all his levers, pumps, and semi-autos, no matter how new or odd looking.

When I pull out a pad and a pencil and figure it up, it doesn't seem reasonable that I could be that old, but I'm not entirely convinced. The proof is that when I pick up a gun in common use in 1919, the walnut and steel feels natural and right. 2019 feels wrong. When the children proudly show me their Glocks and AR's, I have a hard time taking an interest.

I pay a price for this. When I go to the city, I hardly know how to cross the street without a good looking woman willing to hold my hand.

I don`t go in for fads, but that will not stop me from buying a fad gun if that is what I want.
I buy just what I want when I can afford it Sometimes I am about as contrary as one can get, but not about fads guns.
Sometimes the wife compares me to a "suck egg mule"

I would say I'm pretty much with the "I buy whatever I like, shoot whatever I want" crowd. I've been a big fan of the 1911 (especially Colts), for as long as I can remember; same with the Browning Hi-Power, S&W and Colt and Ruger revolvers too!

I've had another word used to describe me. That would be cheapskate. I am more into finding a deal and taking advantage of it to maximize my investment when it comes to firearms. Most often used guns are what I buy as there is a better chance of not paying a premium because of some new trend. YMMV

ETA: I neither follow or avoid a trend it seems. I waited until last year to buy an AR platform firearm but purchased a Mini 14 within a year of them coming out because I liked the round and wanted to own a semi in it and that was the best deal back then. Also I purchased my first 40 in 2014 because that was the last ammo to leave the shelves in WM and I wanted another option in case ammo never came back in stock at good levels and at that point they were selling many police trade in's for low cost.

I bought wheelguns during the Wonder 9 Fad.

I bought 9mm during the .40 Fad.

I bought Double Stacks when the Single got hot.

I bought the .45 when the 9mm and .40 where the guns to have.

Now I'm buying .40's.

Do you follow the herd or do you tend to be a contrarian?

Sounds like a hipster...

Being different for different sake does not mean it’s right...

Whether you buy a “popular” gun or you buy the “out of fashion” gun nobody it posting pics with or raving about on the web, what matters is ‘is it what you want/need?’.

Buying .40 cal guns and ammo right now that no one wants and on sale is a smart thing, certainly a frugal, if it works for you. I saw a Glock G21 Gen 4 LEO trade online yesterday for $359. What a great deal...like the $299 G22’s.

So if you are buying because you are embracing the value of the guns, great.

If you are buying out of favor guns just to be different, well, that’s a hipster thing.

Regardless, if it works for you, more power to ya!

I intensely dislike labels. I'm not conservative or liberal, but probably a mix of both, depending on the situation.

I bought an AR for political and informational reasons, sold it. My last handgun purchase was a non latest and greatest model, in fact an old fashioned, boring, out of fashion .357.

If that puts me in a certain category, so be it. Call me whatever name you want, I personally don't care and won't use it.

I am not a contrarian. I hunt with 06 and refuse to switch to that new fangled 270 cartridge everybody has been talking about.

All my recent deer have been shot with 38 WCF (38-40 to you kids) but I will concede I am a true modernest.... I used smokeless powder.

I do however own a 6.5 Creedmoor (In my defense I bought it early when everyone saids it would fail) I have shoulder issues that preclude shooting stouter calibers.

This is what came to mind when I saw the thread title.

I guess I’ve never really paid a lot of attention to what’s trendy in the gun world. I’ve had THR’ers lecture me I need capacity when I’ve bought a single stack. Yada yada yada. Buy what you like.

I've never owned a Glock, an AR, or a 9mm anything. Had a 1911 and it left after I found an SAA I liked. Only handguns in my house now are revolvers, and 3 of the 4 are single actions. As far as rifles and shotguns, its all walnut and blued steel. I use a 30-30 and an '06 as my main 2 hunting rifles. Both wear Williams receiver sights. I do have a .270 and a 25-06 that wear scopes, but they don't get used a lot. Shotguns are mostly doubles, with a '97 and M12 Winchester thrown in for good measure. Had an A5 once, but sold it after I decided it was too heavy. Only automatic shotgun I've ever owned. Through the years I've never jumped on the latest fads, just stayed with what I know. And what I know works for me, so no need to change when the "newest thing" comes down the pike. Contrary? Perhaps I am. Or maybe I'm just from the old school. What do I know?

I just buy what I want when I want it without any consideration as to what's trending.

I've been moving to 9mm to carry not because of the FBI and PDs switching but because I finally got a shot timer and realized how much faster I can get good hits with 9mm over .45.

I buy whatever I'm into. Sometimes it's whatever is trendy at the time, sometimes it's not.

My first handgun was a .40 cal G23, back when those were THE thing to have. I soon realized I didn't care for the .40 cal or Glocks. My first conceal carry gun was a .380 LCP in 2009/10 when they were selling like hotcakes and .380 ammo was hard to find, and I still really like that gun. I also bought a .357 lever action not long after they were legalized for deer hunting in Ohio and it was near impossible to find one because they were snatched up by hunters as soon as they were listed. And I decided to get into reloading right after the Great Ammo Shortage. So yeah, sometimes I'm going along with the trend.

But at the same time, I like revolvers, both at the range and for conceal carry. I also like steel framed guns like my CZ75 and Hi Power. I have almost as many .22's as I do centerfire rifles and handguns and the ones I shoot the most often are old single shots. I also own a Hi Point pistol and carbine and I'm not ashamed to say that I think they're cool guns. So I've got some interests that aren't necessarily mainstream either.

Contrarian? Absolutely not. I'm always open to scientific innovation if it merits consideration.
It's just that a brace of 14 bore Tower Pistols will serve you supremely well.
Cartridges? Fulminates? Rifling? Sights? Bah! Simply passing folderol!
Flint and frizzen and smooth barrels will never be out of date.
Now what's this I hear about these new go-devil carriages that move without horses?

I wouldn't define myself as a contrarian but I typically don't follow the mainstream. I tend to keep things practical or KISS, which goes against a lot of the old school Cooper teachings as well as the newer tacticool crowd.

I like my wooden warriors; Uncle Sammy gave my a Matty Mattel AR, never liked the twaaaang of the buffer spring in my ear. I don't know a lot about the new guns discussed here; the "G" something or other, or the "P" gee whiz. Manufacturer would mean more. There are some really ugly handguns out there, but people say they are reliable, good for them. I don't collect, any I have must shoot and I don't need more than one. I don't like plastic or whatever name the admen may think up to call plastic. My wooden warriors always draw attention when they go to the range, especially next to one of the AR clones. Besides, mine have a bigger bang. Am I a contrarian....no, I'm a curmudgen.
