Are You a Contrarian?

I’ve become one with regard to the 40 S&W. I avoided it like crazy for years just because I didn’t want another caliber to have to load for, and especially because I didn’t want to keep the brass sorted. The 2013 banic made me see the value in having at least one gun in the caliber, and all the fire sales have made me acquire a few more.

I sort of am a contrarian. I'm a picky eater from as soon as mom started feeding me stuff other than formula.
I never wanted to sleep at night. IMHO, days are for sleeping through, nighttime is the best time.
I have never cared about peer pressure. I do what I want and what I think is right.
I like all metal, all steel if possible guns.
I do not do 1911s.
I do not love Colt Pythons. They are pretty, but I would rather have a pre lock 686 or a Dan Wesson 715.
No Glocks. No XD's.
I love CZ pattern guns.
I have a few striker fired guns, but will not be buying any more of them.
I like revolvers a lot.
I like lever action rifles.
I don't have any real use for a shotgun. Bad shoulders make anything over 410 or so an unpleasant experience.
I don't mess with .40 anymore. It's .22, 380, 38/357. 9mm, 44 spl and mag, and 45 ACP and LC for me.
I do like a lot of bargain priced guns, but two of the last 3 have been over $1000 each. Last one was $300.

I think I walk a fine line between buying what is proven and proving what I buy. My safe has some single action wheel guns, bolt action 30-06s, ARs in 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 SPC and even a SCAR 17. I got into 6.8 SPC when everybody else was hot and bothered for 300 BLK, but that was more about cartridge performance than trying to buck a trend. I pretty much buy what I like and I don’t really care what’s the most popular, but if something new comes along and it makes sense to me, I’ll jump out there and get it. I tend to like oddball stuff like my 6.5 Grendel, 6.5x55 and 7x57, but I keep some guns around that are chambered for more popular cartridges too. Heck, I even have a Winchester Model 70 in 270 Win sitting directly beside a Falkor Defense Omega in 6.5 Creedmoor.

I can say one thing for sure. I never go with anything because it is the Most Popular. I have always thought that choice to be downright stupid. Most popular firearm or pistol? Give me a break. Who made that choice, the vast majority of shooters that never even go to the range on a regular basis? Some internet expert? I tend to go with the person I trust the most. And that person is myself and my experience. Yes, I like opinions, even as many as 10% of them.

I like what I like.
Blued steel and wood predominates my safe.
Older guns preferred, hence the Newton, 94 Win in 30 WCF w/ 22" octagonal barrel and peep and model 97 12 ga 30" that I use as my primary turkey gun.
Older, proven cartridges predominate as well.

I have a 16 ga and a 20 ga, one's a semi that I've had since I was about 8 or 10 and the other is an O/U I've had about 10-12 years

The 'newest' gun in my stable is a post-64 (heck, post '84) Win model 70.

Handguns? I have exactly 2 semi-autos. a 9 and a 22 LR. The 9 is relatively new. The 22 is an old HIgh Standard MIlitary Citation target

Then there are the wheel guns - 22, 357 & 41. Sold the SAA 45.

I had a Glock once, for about two days, before I sold it. Won it in a raffle.

Is all of that contrarian? Doubtful. But, I really don't care. :D :):p:neener:

I've chosen my firearms for many different reasons. I've never based my decision on what is popular or what is contrary to the mainstream. My choices tend not to be trendy, but that is not intentional. My edc is a Ruger LCR. The only other handguns I own are a GP100 and a RIA 1911, although I'm planning to add a BHP soon. I have no desire to own a Glock or any other striker fired pistol. They just don't appeal to me. I'm 65, but didn't purchase an AR until a couple years ago. I enjoy shooting it, but also enjoy shooting my 20 Ga NEF single shot as well. I buy and shoot what I like and even though I try to stay current on what is popular, I don't let the latest trends influence my choices one way or the other.

Are you a contrarian?
I bought wheelguns during the Wonder 9 Fad.
I bought 9mm during the .40 Fad.
I bought Double Stacks when the Single got hot.
I bought the .45 when the 9mm and .40 were the guns to have.
Now I'm buying .40's.
Do you follow the herd or do you tend to be a contrarian?

Probably not a contrarian as I only buy what I specifically want IF I have the money. As of now, there is only one rifle I am even remotely considering and that is the Keltec CMR-30 so I can pair it with the pistol PMR-30.

didn't read all these posts but as someone said I like what I like. im a simple man. 9mm and 357 get everything done for me in handguns. 243.30-06 and 6.5x55 do everything a rifle needs to do.

I buy firearms that I'm interested and/or have a perceived usefulness for me. Sometimes I follow a trend, sometimes I go off on my own tangent.

Sometimes my choices are good for my purposes, sometimes the trendy stuff is junk for my purposes.

Fortunately, I'm in a position that I can experiment.
