Are you old enough to remember when firearms were proudly displayed?

Nobody thought about it. Nobody would have imagined using that rifle to kill another student. And nobody ever did use their gun to hurt somebody else.
Pretty sad isn't it? My high school years were the early to mid 60s and in LI NY. I could buy a gun in a hardware store as easy as a hammer and nails. Yet, gun violence was unheard of. So what changed? Year after year we see more and more gun related crime. Maybe back then we had a judicial system which meted out swift punishment to those who disregarded the law where as today we seem to have a judicial system more enmeshed with the rights of criminals than victims? What legislators have yet to figure out is they can't legislate morality.

Going hunting at my school would get you an excused absence. My older brother got me out of school in the 5th grade to do just that and the principal and my teacher simply waved me out with "have a good time".

When I was a second grader that was attending a reservation school in northern California we had a flood that washed out the bridge that most of us had to cross. The school hired some folks to bring in a string of horses and ponies to ferry us across Indian Creek and take us to the old log high school, then take us back across the stream to get back on the bus to go home. (The new elementary school had been flooded out, as well.) I was interested to notice that the guides all carried pistols right into the school.
Imagine that happening in a California school today... .

When I was packing horses and mules we always carried pistols.
You never knew when you'd have to put a critter down.
I see packers for concessionaires in the National Parks and it bothers me they're not allowed to carry ( unless they're rangers)

Why can’t they carry? Concealed carry is legal in National Parks as long as you’re not also violating the laws of the state you’re in, I thought?

Actually in West Virginia the first day of deer gun season was a school holiday. They called it Deer Day. Been some years but I assume it still holds true.
