Recently we have had an open carry bill introduced by Republican Representative Sue Scott of Rogers, it has a large ammount of support but maybe not enough. House Speaker Davy Carter and Gov. Beebe have both said they oppose it. This bill is moving to be heard in the house on Tuesday, February 26, thats tommorow! Even if you dont live in Arkansas please take time to help all of us Arkansas guys out and contact Mr. Carter and tell him how you feel. We are one of only 6 states who still ban open carry.

    Here is his contact information:

As a concerned citizen and ccw license holder I strongly urge you to support HB 1408

This is not new ground and has been a resounding success for liberty in the many other states who've adopted such a policy. Your support would not go un noticed

I used to live in his district, and he tended to be pro-gun and pro-liberty. I'm not sure why he's not supporting this one.

I hope some supporters turn out for the committee hearing today. I am not as involved in this one as I was in SB71 and its predecessors (I went to hearings in 2009 and 2011, and had the opportunity to speak to a committee in 2011), but I expect that Arkansas Carry will have supporters there. I am personally ambivalent about this bill, but wish it well. Were it to pass, I'd probably just continue to carry concealed, unless there was some good reason to go open carry. But given that it requires a license, I'm not as supportive as I would be of a bill that created open carry like they have in Arizona.

Added: If I were at the committee hearing, or otherwise had an opportunity to lobby for the bill, I think a good argument to make would be to contrast it as very "conservative" compared to Arizona. That might influence someone on the fence.

Done. Beebe is on record that he will veto any OC bill.

Too many restrictions just like the college handgun carry bill which makes it near worthless.

Precisely the same restrictions as in the current CHL law. Is that worthless? As I noted earlier, I'd rather see a law like Arizona's. But that isn't going to happen, and if this bill did become law, it would be no more or less worthless than the current CHL law.

By every news account I can find, the bill was defeated in committee. However, the bill is on the schedule for Thursday. Maybe there is still hope.

I agree it isn't as good as Arizona or others, but I particularly like the added protection if I inadvertently uncover my handgun. That allows me to reconsider carry platforms and clothing options.

Inadvertent uncovering protection I would like as well. Other than that, I wouldn't OC anyway.
