gunlistings.org seems to attract about 2 listings per day for an entire state. Armslist would usually attract more than that per individual city. That is (was) the beauty of that site - high traffic and city by city based. Also , the front page allowed you to scroll though the ads with fairly large images.

    It really worked.
    Oh well, nothing lasts forever.

If gunlistings.org fixed some issues they could be a real competitor to armslist now that they are charging a fee. Maybe gunslistings has fixed them, been a while since I listed anything on there but their email feature never worked, and I was never able to edit or remove an ad once I sold the item. And you would see something you were interested in, try to contact them through the site but it doesn’t work. The seller has to list their # or email address. Darn shame armslist had to mess up a good thing, I’ve always had excellent luck buying, selling and trading on there.

I have a few listings still active from before the shift to a paywall. I've added a contact number to those listings so that buyers can get in touch without paying.

I also noticed the local dealers on armslist just added phone and email and notes to contact directly to their listing

Main question I would have is: Is it worthwhile for someone to put in the effort to be the "new alternative"? Seems like there's a fair amount of risk and not a lot of reward.

Perhaps get affiliated with a gun rights organization with lawyers.

Not really sure what that means?

There is risk, in both the legal sense (which I guess is what you're talking about) and in the sense of time and money spent. What is the reward? What's the upside for someone who does this?

Frankly, I'm asking because I could spin up something like that in a couple months. But I don't know if there's really any point putting out the effort.

I'm sure it would be well used and greatly appreciated - the trick would be getting it to pay for itself.

Charging a flat fee to list a gun seems like the best and most sustainable model. Maybe offer the first listing for free to draw traffic?

Having to pay to list would significantly cut down on the scammers.

The vast majority of scammers on AL are "buyers". Assessing a fee to sellers would not impede those scammers , and charging a fee to buyers is a user killer.

From my perspective I only worry about scams from sellers. I know better than to ever ship a gun or do anything other than face to face in a public place.

A small listing fee, as suggested, would probably resolve that. Hosting really isn't that expensive. It's just that I've done stuff like this before, and it's always been quite difficult to get people to use it, especially when there are alternatives. Even when those alternatives are lousy.

Would probably want to get some legal advice on this one, given the nature of the subject.

Cryptic Craigslist sounds like fun , but I can't imagine that many potential buyers would happen to see such an ad. There wouldn't even be a basis for a search.

I wonder if finding a better way to organize the Buy/sell thread in THR might make it easier to navigate and more useful. It would be nice to be able to search by state at least. This is one of the largest general firearms forums online isn’t it? It seems like it might be an opportunity. You could even vet the seller by seeing what kind of stuff they post.

I wonder why Armslist would only have a fee for some states? There is no fee in Oregon, I check daily for something I want.

I wouldn't mind so much a $25 annual fee. Retired, so kinda watch what I spend. I'm not in it for profit, just to get a different gun every now and then to try out. Guess I need to find something different to take up my time.
I was able to open up a contact with a Dealer here in Missouri this morning, so that option is still open. But would have to sell something to buy, not going to pay $4 AHC monthly fees or higher CC fee.

Missouri here. In above post I said I was able to open Contact with local dealer. Just now tried to open Contact with non-Dealer and I got the Upgrade notice. So I can browse ONLY, unless I Upgrade..

That would get flagged. Kinda surprised mine hasn't been flagged. One cannot include the name of a gun. So I put pruger. If I would have put ruger flagged in 10 minutes.

Back before I discovered armslist I used Craigslist. My normal thing was to list the holster for the gun I was selling. Several local people were doing the same thing. So you would just go on Craigslist and search for holsters. After armslist that pretty much stopped. I could see it making a comeback. Lol.

With eight handguns in my so-called “handgun collection”, and not needing any more (handguns or rifles)......

the idea of needing to figure out how to use the “New Armslist” Terms means that I’ll simply scan the used display cases in local gun shops more often.

Net result of their new terms?
No new guns seem to have been listed for many days/weeks here, and I check four brands every night—-partly explained by the Glut of Handgun Availability.
