Must be something in the water......

Another story.

HYATTSVILLEMd. - Investigators said they held up residents in front of an apartment building in the 2700 block of Nicholson Street, in Hyattsville, Md. Authorities said five men were getting out of a car when two men, claiming to be police officers, approached them.

Investigators said each man wore a law-enforcement type vest with the word "agent" on it, a star-shaped badge hanging from a chain around his neck and a handgun on his hip. They reportedly said they had received complaints about loitering.

Neither man drew a weapon, but police said they ordered the people out of the car and began patting them down taking cash and wallets in the process.

Doesn't sound like any legitimate Law Enforcement Agency actions to me.

More like some sort of fakers shaking down some folks.

Any LE will have legitimate photo ID, but when they are armed, and you are not, asking for ID is pretty silly. You are just screwed. Have a nice day, hope you aren't dead.

Sounds like typical police action to me. They just usually go through the courts to take your money and property. Fines for this, fines for that. If there's a "Bad plant" growing on your property, well then, they just steal your house, car, and everything else they can get their hands on.

And heaven forbid you synthesize not-very-toxic *chemicals* on your property. They might evacuate the neighbors, murder you, then take your property while making the taxpayers pay to clean up your blood and repair the bullet holes and scorch marks.

These clownish thugs are just cutting through the red tape.

I have lots of respect for the 99% of cops that are good and decent people. Nonetheless, if I ever get a knock on the door like this, I will kindly ask the person in question to slide the warrant under the door. No warrant = no open door, and the good officer and I can have a conversation through the door. Someone who is legit will do this, esp. if you explain that there's no way for you to know if they are a real officer or someone merely playing the role (and, as the article in question indicates, there are all too many of these incidents). I've got to believe that this is the safest course of action, and one that any real officer will respect - as long as you show them respect in making the request.

By the way, if any officer refuses to hand me a warrant, then the local PD will get a call. That way I can see if they really sent anyone, and complain if the circumstances call for it. If they didn't, then they'll know that someone is out there impersonating officers; if they did, then they'll know that another citizen expects to have his rights respected by public servants.

Unless an officer is in a full uniform. Not just BDUs and a badge around the neck. There is nothing wrong with asking for photo ID. We all have it and I have shown mine many times upon request.
In responce to the person who said slide the warrant under the door. That I don't see anyone doing. To much risk of getting shot while in front of the door. I would however not mind waiting for you to call 911 to confirm my presence, as long as it was not a no knock warrant or emergency circumstances.

You have got to be kidding with this right. What not so toxic chemicals? Meth perhaps. And murder as well. Where on gods earth do you come up with this.
Get some help. The "bad plants" are making you paranoid.

I don't see how a case of some thugs pretending to be cops turned into a tirade on the War on Drugs but, i want to comment on one part of this. I'm not going to launch into a discussion on the WOD in this particular thread (feel free to start one for that discussion). But, the refference to "not-very-toxic chemicals" needs to be addressed.

Much of the process of the synthesizing Meth does indeed involve a number of HIGHLY toxic chemicals. And yes, the neighbors need to be evacuated. I have seen first hand what can happen when a meth-lab explodes and it isnt pretty. The "scientist" that was making the goods came into the hospital minus about %80 of his skin. So, yeah wether or not drugs should be legal is another discussion. But, I really don't think that distributing dis-information regarding the dangers of meth-labs is the way to put forth your agenda.

Fake Cops:
Just what we (the cops & good citizens) need, some folks making it even more difficult to maintain trust betwen the peace officers & the other citizens.

Meth Labs:
I'm pretty much a "legalize it & treat it like alcohol" kind of guy when it comes to ingested chemicals. I don't buy the "meth is the new crack which was the new heroin which is coming back and, so, plain old heroin is the really the "new heroin," propaganda put out buy the Drug Warriors. I can say I don't really mind when meth labs get shut down. I think of it less as part of the War on (some) Drugs and more busting fools for mishandling and improperly storing volatile substances.
