Here's the link to the thread at rimfirecentral.com where it all started:

And thanks again to Harry Tuttle for photoshopping the original concept art!

whoops

OK, those were the original concept art pics i drew. Maybe I can find the actual pics now...

OK, pic 1 show the 2 stocks as they arrive.
Pic 2 shows the cut and the tape I used to mark the proper plae to saw.
picc 3 i believe i used to show that the sine que non of the packer stock does not even need the shoulder stock part.
pic 4 is to show the cut out area of the original packer stock (right) to allow fo rthe packer mechanism. This was easily cutout of the Butler Creek stock to match.
pic 5 shows the first marriage of the 2, before cosmetic filing etc and the shoulder stock, while present, is notin the pic because of space limitations when trying to post on RFC.

few more

And the last few:

OK, the first is the stock all folded up. Really cool. It was a financial risk, but I am SOOOOOO glad I tried this! It is unique, cool, and ridiculously easy to do!
The last 2 pics are to show that i had to cut a groove in the pistol grip to allow the packer forend to fold enough for barrel removal/insertion. Like i say in the rfc post, a more talented guy could cut the red-rubber-tipped Packer takedown switch, shorten and round off the packer forend to match, and not have to make this groove in the handle at all.
Maybe the lucky guy who brings it to the commercial market will do that.
(Hey, i doubt I will do it seriously. So if someone does market the thing, just give me some credit OK?)

Very slick...Is that a letter size (8 1/2"x11") paper it's resting on? If it is then it should fit right nice in a brief case with room to spare.

Yeah, it is cool.

I forget exactly what piece of paper that was. Still to give some estimate of size: i know that when folded, and attached to a factory barrel, the OAL is just over 26 inches- closer to 27 really. Still feels like a big pistol, but the folded stock makes it kind-of awkward to fire one-handed with the stock folded. To me anyway.

As for how much, it was just the cost of the Butler Creek steel folder plus the packer stock, plus the 10/22, and some time with a dremel.

I only did the one, and would be happy to make another for someone (with no promises, as I am not a professional smith). But this project was SOOO easy that really, you could do it yourself with no problems.

nice! but isn't there fome federal law against folding stocks?

~TMM

Nope. Folding stocks are legal again since the demise of the '94 AWB.

However, the gun, when the barrel's attached, still has to meet a minimum length per ATF regs.

With the barrel removed, I *believe* the length restriction doesn't apply. HKMP5SD, you have your FFL rule books lying around? Mine are packed for my deployment and retirement move... :(

right.

That's why I mentioned the non-NFA length of the device when folded. You can't be too careful with stuff like that.

the rifle isn't exactly complete without the barrel attached -

example read: I have an AR-15 receiver which for legal purposes is a "firearm" without components that make it functional (barrel, buttstock, buffer tube etc) and is below 10" in length.

It's not illegal to own parts that are not a complete weapon as long as the completed weapon is a legal one. The 10/22 is legal in length when assembled and that's the important detail.

otherwise the BATF would be busting in people's doors in the middle of the night snatching up rifle receivers and calling them "unregistered SBRs".
