Aussie traveling through US - where to visit

Wow,

overwhelming responses guys!

I think i am going to have to plug all those things into google maps and see how i can plan my trip around them (including kind offers to meet up) .

I have done both east and west coast previously and have done the NRA museum (and was lucky enough to do the Whitehouse and FBI tours also). I have also done the LA -VEGAS - arizona run befor (boneyard was awsome)

some great suggestions there - right down my alley.

I've got a bit of planning to do, but will come back with a tighter schedule and get back to people that responded with specific offers.

I agree with those that suggested keeping to the back roads and small towns - had some good times following that advice

As mentioned, any one coming to AUs should definitely drop by the lithgo small arms museum (good drive - 2hrs from Sydney - worth a trip)

Thanks again

Kentucky is still a good place to visit, Bourbon, Horse Racing (Church Hill Downs), Louisville Slugger Museum, etc. etc. -- Knob Creek is just a topper - Not to mention some of the friendliest people East of the Mississippi.

Come to Boston. You can see what high taxes, liberal politics and restrictive gun laws look like. Oh yeah, you're from Austrailia. You've already seen that.

I've also been to the museum in Cody, Wyoming. But outside of the museum, there isn't much else going on there.

I'd recommend instead that you time a visit to Wyoming to coincide with Frontier Days, either in Cheyenne or in Laramie (where I was born back in the 1960's). Then you can watch rodeos, steer roping, barrel racing, and maybe even a demolition derby or two.

Why not attend a two day defensive handgun or rifle course?

There are many schools around and most, if not all, rent guns and gear.

Only IF you happen to find yourself on Interstate 20, between Atlanta, Ga. and Birmingham, Al., check out the Berman Museum in Annistion, Al. It is located on the same grounds as the Museum of Natural History. The collections at the Berman are heavy with weapons from a private collection. Lots of militaria. Domestic and foreign. I believe the collector was an American military officer.

Port St. Lucie FL, Navy seal museum.

US trip

I would second the suggestion about Springfield Armory, they have over 40,000 guns in the collection I believe and the building is an excellent example of a pre-industrial revolution manufacturing facility. Also, just a few miles away is Smith and Wesson which has a nice indoor range open to the public, you can rent handguns to be used on the range at a nominal cost. They also have a nice shop there.

Tinker (post 59)
If he gets that far he's missed Arkansas :)

Jrckelly
If you do get that far you may as well go up past the lake to Huntsville and do the NASA tour, then up into Tennessee to Jack Daniels Distillery and Nashville to take the blue line walking tour. Then you can swing back down to Little Rock after eating pulled pork in Memphis, where Graceland would be an entertaining side tour.

AUGH! You already did the Boneyard! Stole my thunder. :D

The suggestion to join AAA (American Automotive Association), or otherwise, get maps from them, is spot on. You said you've already done the backroads thing before, though, so I'm guessing you've already got a couple AAA maps.

If you do Washington DC again, and you liked the Boneyard, you'll LOVE the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. They've got all sorts of stuff, like the plane that first broke the sound barrier, the capsule from the first moon-landing, the Wright brothers' plane, a bunch of ballistic missiles, and a lot of other cool stuff.

Locations in many states. You can see the weapons that you wish you could have at this price.
I did not see what states you planned on traveling through.
In 1976 I was leaving Virginia and heading west to Oregon. I never got there.
The people , beer and deer in Wisconsin way laid me. I am not a city type person and if good stout beer cheese are on top of your list , well stop in Stevens Point Wisconsin and talk guns and history.

At least one other mention of this that I saw, but Springfield Armory is excellent. Then about an hour south is the Submarine Museum in Groton, CT with the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear powered submarine, then you're just an hour away from NYC with the 911 Memorial. That's a very full and interesting day.
