Well, my finances and schedule have finally normalized to the point where I'm ready to get my CHL.

I've already got the "packet" from TX DPS.

Now I just need to take the class.

What are my options in the greater Austin area? Anybody have a particularly good or bad experience? What is the typical cost?

Thanks!

I took mine at Red's in Pflugerville, when it was still Cook's. It was pretty painless. You could look there or Eagle Peak outside Cedar Park. The prices should all be competitive. I think I paid around $120, but that was a few years ago.

Dee, out at Eagle Peak in Leander, is good and knows her stuff. I shoot there every week.

I'm also a big fan of KR Training. They recommend Tom Schaefer (sp?), who's listed on the krtraining.com web page under their CHL classes.

Good luck!

A fellow named Ross Branford leaves his business card in all the gun stores. He has full-service classes. He takes the photos, helps with the forms, and his wife is a notary so that process is taken care of on the spot. He even had some fingerprint takers that also work for DPS, IIRC. And, he is quite entertaining.

There is also krtraining.com, and others you can find on the wall at McBrides. Lots to choose from.

Jim Kent charges $80. Cost Plus 10 % Gun Shop on Burnet Lane. This includes notary service but no photo or fingerprints. He uses the Austin Skeet and Rifle Range out past Manor, so you have to drive out there to shoot.

Dean McCormick out in Cedar Creek is a good guy.

I'll second the recommendation for Jim at Cost +10%. He's a good guy and has great ammo and firearm prices.

I HIGHLY recommend Calvin Tidwell at Red's. My son and I were expecting the class to be long and boring, but Calvin did a great job. When we went for renewal we both make sure we signed up for a Calvin taught class.
