Anyone have much experience with these? I'm trying to pick out a pistol for my (small) wife, that would have a little better power than a .22 LR, yet almost no recoil. How accurate (or not) are they, and how reliable (or not) are they. In particular, I like that they are stainless... Thanks for any info.

.22 automag

AMT used to make a .22 automag.
I don't think that they produce them any longer.
I'm certain that they can still be found, but if it was a very successful model, I think that it would still be in production.
Maybe a .22 mag. revolver would be a viable solution.
If an auto loader is desired, perhaps a .380 cal. Descent ballistics, and with hollowpoint ammo, will do the job.
A 9mm., I think would be preferrable, still not a lot of perceived recoil; and available in nice compact models.
Hope this helps, but it is, after all only an opinion.

AMT firearms doesnt exist. They went belly up a long time ago. THAT is why they dont make that model anymore.

I guess that's a fairly good reason.
I had one of their .22 LR autos' and really liked it,(Ruger knockoff).
The only ammo that it liked was the Remington Yellowjackets.

AMT had some decent guns for economical prices. The AMT Hardballer is still listed by many holster manufacturors, event hough its been out of production for years.

Supposedly, High Standard has them back in production:

When the Automag II was first introduced, only Winchester ammo was recommended by the manufacturer. Some didn't believe this and found that other brands of ammo were not reliable. As I recall most of the reported problems occurred with CCI. Later, the powder in CCI ammo was changed.

My college roomate had one and loved it. He said it was the most accurate handgun he had ever used. His father, who was on the Air Force pistol team, agreed.

I had one. It was an impressive noisemaker. Flash and report was definitely an attention getter. I read the manufacturers recommendation that only Winchester be used, I followed it, and never had a problem. Mine wasn't as accurate as you would expect a .22 to be. Maybe my Ruger MKI Target spoiled me, but my average was probably somewhere in the 2.5-3 inch at 50 ft. range. Sold it to get other acquisitions - that an ammo was nearly as expensive as 9mm.

I had one several years ago. It was fun to play with, lot of noise, lot of muzzleflash, but not good for much else.

I think I paid around $150 for it and sold it for about $200. Here recently I have been seeing them selling in the mid 3's

I have one. Shoots really good, is accurate. Never had any trouble with it. Probably as accurate as any non target auto.
The muzzle flash is really impressive, and the sound is really neat.
Someone is making them again. I saw an ad just a few months ago. List price is either 599.00 or 699.00, I cannot remember for sure.
