"Automatic gunfire" a pretty loose term

Just watching ABC news of the search for the boston bomber. The headline said "automatic gunfire" was heard near the lockdown area

then they played the audio of the gunfire

"pop........pop.........pop."

Literally a second or so between shots. Even my wife who never shoots knows the difference and said it doesn't sound like full-auto.

How can we educate the public and/or media on the difference?!? :banghead:

That's true. They no longer have it say "automatic." It just says "shots fired," or shots heard. So maybe they were called on it after they played the audio.

I guess from a shots-per-minute standpoint, there is no minimum for what constitutes automatic. It is strictly a mechanical definition.

Once again, you can't beat the media, but you can explain things in a calm and rational fashion to non gun-owners in person. You make converts outside of the biased system, not through it. Maybe it was automatic because it was the result of a robot or drone and no human initiated it......

Our news folks are just plain ignorant.

I've even talked to people who hunt who had no idea an M-16 shoots a gopher cartridge - they thought it was some "super powerful" gun. At least most hunters can be educated.

I heard one of the newscasters talking about how he had "heard assault rifle fire", followed by somewhat rapid -- but quite obviously semiautomatic -- shots in the background noise.

I think that's quite a skill, to be able to tell what kind of firearm is shooting based on just the noise like that.

Those talking heads are experts in everything, they will tell you even if you don't ask. In WWII the English SMLE riflemen were so proficient with their rifles that the Germans thought they were up against individuals with automatic firearms while in reality they were bolt action rifles.

My favorite description of the shooting was........ "it sounds like out going fire, but no incoming fire at this time" what that hell does that mean?? I heard the term outgoing and incoming fire many times in the desert but how a reporter 2 city blocks away can tell what is incoming and outgoing just cracked me up. That followed by, you can hear the automatic fire from the suspects handgun as the police close in on him.

Some do not fit at all. Others are down right confused and enraging.

But..........the populace is considered to be mindless drones. The MSM is not cognizant of folks like us that can actually tell the difference between rimfire ammunition and M777 155mm rounds.

They are not journalists. They are not reporters. They don't need to or care to know anything about firearms beyond the overly generic and inaccurate terms they're taught to use.

That's due to role reversal. Since the AR has been so demonized, it is no longer the good guy gun. And the AK has been flying under the radar so it is no longer the bad-guy, terrorist, commie gun.
