Background Checks For Ammunition Purchases

So what does that mean exactly? You have your great grandfathers 22 you have to pay extra if it’s not under your name?
That would be my understanding. While not trying to cross a thread line here, it's damn near impossible to keep up and understand the flurry of all these laws that get passed here in Ca.
Just doing the best I can while here.

I'm in the Rochester NY area. Went to pick up some ammo this evening from Sportsman's Warehouse and was delayed. Asked the guy, "should I be worried? Is this normal?"
FWIW According to him every other person they run though the system is being delayed. Said its been taking 1-2 days for a response.

I really would prefer not to drive down to PA this weekend.

Well gun owners around the country (even in red states) keep voting for representatives who don't care anything about guns all the while antigunners all around the country keep voting for politicians into Congress and the presidency who avidly hate and actively will attack gun rights.... Looks like come 2024, the progun side is hell bent on will nominating another gut who cares nothing about gun rights and who has a history of being antigun for president again.

I'm not surprised by these type of laws. They know they can get away with it because we do not put people into office who will stop them or appoint judges who will stop them. We are getting what we voted for.

I agree with most of what you’ve said.
but, I’m not getting what I voted for!
I’m being governed by what people in the larger metropolitan areas feel is important and how they vote.

Well looks like the state may have sank it's first battleship. The big Syracuse, NY fall gun show was this past week end. Several guys I know went and said it was a ghost town compared to years past and none of the big ammo vendors. One guy was there towards the end on Sunday and the announcer came on the PA and one thing he said was " This may be the last Syracuse gun show". But THEY say it's only stop criminals.

It has nothing to do with safety. It is simply another move to discourage people from shooting. Just one more chip knocked off your freedom. Now the chisel will be applied somewhere else to knock of another chip and so on until we have no rights at all. Then you will learn the meaning of subject or really just a serf to the one's in power.

This is aimed at law abiding citizens. There are plenty of state and federal laws aimed at criminals but aren't used by the authorities. Quit taking aim at people that cause no problems and do your job to rid us of these that do. That will not happen. It is in the anti's favor for gun crime to continue so they will have an excuse to eventually take them away from every except one class---the criminals.

The NM governor's illegal and stupid gun ban that only took away the rights of law abiding citizens is a perfect example. After getting her hands slapped she fell back on the excuse it was to get a dialog going on how to pass laws to prevent the random shooting of kids by other kids. Wake up, Stupid! The laws are already there, The problem is that certain areas of the state won't enforce them. You were just making a power play to see if it would fly.

And I see the same sort of pollyannish thinking in a few other states in which gun owners feel secure in the belief it won't happen to their state.

I tend to agree. Heck, I live in TEXAS... where everyone carries a gun, right? Wrong. All of the large metro areas are dens of Liberalism, to include the capital, Austin. Unfortunately, those are also the people who write the laws, and the rich metro- and suburbanites who dump money into liberal candidates, who then get elected. One good example is 'Beto' O'rourke, who just a few years ago very nearly beat Ted Cruz for a US Senate seat, and then took off on the trail to become Governor... loudly proclaiming that 'Hell yes I'm going to take away your AR-15!' ...and the mindless throngs of people cheering and throwing money at him like a stripper. I always figure we are but one election cycle away from some form of gun control... even here in Texas.

Totally and completely agree with this^^^. Don't think it can't happen in your state? Sad state of affairs, but, it can.

The problem is all these politicians are lawyers, truly one of the most destructive of all professions. As soon as that profession got into politics they destroyed it and our freedoms along with it a perfect example is hochul and the other one from new mexico !

It's weird how that works. We have Tallahassee, you have Austin, Washington has Olympia.

The background check and taxation have gone into effect. I suggest that New York run background checks on voters and bring back poll taxes.

Other parts of the law relate to concealed carry permits. Renewal is every three years. One also must submit their social media accounts. I guess the latter is to make sure the applicant has "correct thinking". One must never offend Big Brother, don't'cha'know.

People who still believe in the Constitution are going to have to move out of socialist states. Difficult to find America anymore. The cancer of socialism is profoundly malignant. The urban areas are lost to it.

"ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Several new gun control laws signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul are now in effect in New York State. As of Wednesday, background checks are now required for ammunition purchases. Dealers will now also submit background check requests to New York State Police, instead of submitting requests directly from the FBI.

"To cover the cost of the New York State background check system, there is now a $9.00 fee on all firearm transactions, and a $2.50 fee for all ammunition sales.

"Other parts of the “Concealed Carry Improvement Act” went into effect earlier this month. The changes include:

  • New Requirements for Individuals Seeking to Obtain Concealed Carry Pistol Permits Include Firearm Trainings, In-Person Interview, and Social Media Review, Among Others
  • Conceal Carry Restrictions Apply to Sensitive Locations Including Times Square, Bars, Libraries, Schools, Government Buildings and Hospitals
  • Permit Recertification or Renewal Now Required Every Three Years

"The new requirements to obtain a concealed carry license are:
  • proof of completion of a firearms safety training course;
  • four character references;
  • a list of former and current social media accounts for the last three years;
  • disclosure of applicant’s spouse or domestic partner, any other adults residing in the applicant’s home, including any adult children of the applicant, and
  • an in-person interview of the applicant with the licensing officer/designee.
"Gov. Hochul signed the law last year in response to what she described as a “reckless decision” by the Supreme Court. In a 6-3 decision, the Court ruled a New York law requiring concealed carry applicants to prove a special need for a permit – instead of just self-defense – violated the Second Amendment. The new laws are the latest in a series of gun control measures signed by Gov. Hochul. "
This is going to be a dumb question, but are private sales of ammunition allowed?

Here ya go.
Complaints don't matter. It's not like the politicians who enacted the law have to worry about any repercussions or being voted out and by Republicans or pro gun Democrats if there is such a thing. The only hope they have is that SCOTUS does away with the law 2 to 4 years from now.

These intentionally destructive "laws" will of course do nothing, but garner power for the government. I wonder how much these rules increase sales in neighboring states? Most shooters would happily drive an hour or two across a State line and buy a large supply of ammo....with cash and no background check.
Such behavior on the part of government officials is nothing more than an official tantrum.

NY is going full communist at this point. Glad I left after all those years living in a state that has violated my 2nd Amendment rights for my entire lifetime. I doubt it can be saved.

There's the "allowed" thingy, but then there's the "who's goin' to know" retort.

On this site, there are folk who have purchased ammunition from all around this planet. I've tried to think from where I've NOT purchased ammo.

And ammo lasts for decades if stored semi-reasonably. Sometimes it's been stored and exposed to extreme temperature swings and yet still fires fine.

Guns and ammo are LOW-tech. Hey, let's all go out and kill all of the rats and roaches on Earth! 😉

Want to control crime?! Hold people responsible for their inappropriate actions.

Me, I have safes and lock-up weapons and ammo which aren't in use. I recommend this practice for all. Too, in fire safes, you can also store needed documents and keepsakes. Survival Basics 101 : Water purification, food pantry, fire prevention / extinguishing equip, and security.

👽"Welcome to Earth, everyone!"👽

Thangs iz az they iz. Ain't no changin'em. No-sirree!

That's why it's bogus and nothing but another unconstitutional impediment. And our Republic has become so brainwashed by false propaganda they continue to believe the lies and have no actual ability to think.

Ny is a prime example of what happens when you stick your head in the dirt about gun control. "Oh that will never pass" or "The courts will side with gun rights." SCOTUS did side with gun rights and NY turned right around and doubled down on gun control. Just like myself and many others here predicted. They will never stop trying to take firearms away. If they can't win legally, they will make it more expensive to own firearms. Look at the excise tax California just passed or the purposed 1000% tax on anything called an "assault weapon."
