I bought a Baker Gun Co. double barrel shotgun, marked "Batavia Leader", at an auction on Sunday and it appears to have some problems. It is a sidelock gun with beautiful 30' barrels. Metal finish is about 90% and the wood is decent. However, I tried it out this morning and the right barrel will not fire; the left barrel fired OK. Anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong? Any suggestions on a gunsmith who could fix the problem? I am in south-central PA. I am a neophyte on these old timers and any insights would be greatly appreciated.

A good quality shotgun and well worth fixing. Contact Shyda's in Lancaster, I think, and see if they can recommend a local smith.

HTH....

There's a guy over my way who does beautiful work on SXS's. He's not cheap and you'll wait a few months. Don't know if you want to travel to Saylorsburg in the Poconos though. PM me if you want details. He fixed a Western ( Ithaca ) SXS for me ( Hammer broke ) and he's putting a Limbsaver on my Spartan coach gun. And I've known him to refurbish L.C. Smith's and the like.

Thanks for the responses guys. Kevin, could you give me some details on the gunsmith you mentioned? I only paid $90.00 for the Baker shotgun so I guess I could afford to spend a little to get it put right. I'm curious what it's value might be, assuming it was fixed.

Add a zero to that $90 and you'll get a starting price on Bakers. One in fine shape may bring a couple grand.

Enjoy....
