I am considering investing in a Olympic Arms .40 Caliber AR-15. This would be used for home defense and as a rifle to shoot at my local pistol range (which is closer to my home). However, when I do visit the rifle range, is a .40 Caliber AR-15 going to be viable 25-100 yards? (accurate enough, not very dramatic drop etc.) Also, the rifle is available only in an A2 configuration, what are my optic options? Who makes a good carry handle rail (the only one I have found is TAPCO, and, well, ewwww, tapco :(). I'd probably pop a 2.5x optic on the rail and that would be my rifle range setup I'd swap that with a red dot sight for the pistol range and home defense.

I'd say it'd probably do fine at 100 yards. Hickock45 hits targets out to 300+ yards with handguns all day, so a rifle would be even better.

I recall him stating the big black gong at his "regular" range is 80 yards which he shoots with hand guns a lot. I can't recall him shooting 300+ yards with low power (relative) hand guns like the .40, 9MM, etc. I think he has done it with the higher power hand guns (.44 Mag, etc). I could be wrong though, the guy has what, over 500 videos now? Yikes!

There are some very fast .40 S&W loads out there and as high pressure as they are I suspect they would be even faster out of a rifle. Double Tap has a load reaching 1,500 FPS if I remember correctly. That's out of a hand gun. Would like to see one out of a rifle.

A 40 cal will shoot at 50 yards all day long out of a pistol, if you are good enough. I used to shoot alot of bullseye matches which are at 50 and 25 yards. 100 yards is a bit much. Just use a rifle caliber for anything over 50 or so yards. Past that, it is just plinking.....I don't shoot my Kel Tec 2000 over 50 yards, but I could. chris3

Using my short (10") barrel Uzi I can get decent 4MOA groups all day long. I've used it at the local rifle match and gotten hits out to 200 yards.

Lighter, faster bullets like 135gr are going to drop less than Heavy slow 180s.
