Barbecue rig on a Weber budget

Don't worry Hardluk1, I didn't grow up with gun people, so when I first heard the term, I thought it might be some anti-gun ceremony like a bra burning of the women's lib era. :)

I guess i am the only person around that thinks the idea of a bbq gun as one of stupidist things to do ever. Is there a bbq watch or pickup that only comes out for bbq day? Just don't get it..

Yep. I live in an ultralib fascist state and we still have BBQ guns up here too. A group of friends will get together and BBQ and talk guns and usually have a few more in the car or truck to show also. After all the eating is done everyone goes to the back of the house for a little shooting fun. This usually winds down around dark. Then the guns get put away and the beer comes out. Its how us "right wing nut job terrorist" and "toothless redneck gun toters" have a good time. The other main attraction around here is stuffing envelopes for the ACLU/Democrat Party/ACORN or looking at pictures of Obama and drooling.

Agreed... Now why the hell would you get dressed up nicely for church? How weird!... oh, and i would never wash my car before a carshow either.

essayons21 Still don't get it. Kinda a like the rich guy with a harley that has it only to show to friends ,but does not ride it? All my guns and scooter look used and warn and are ,like them that way, can't trust show queens. If i thought i had to show a handgun it would be a 33 year old revolver ,not purty by todays standards but it has a real track record.

hardluk1,

I generally feel the same way, but when I picked up a 6" S&W 686 (no dash) purely for target shooting, I decided to spend a little bit of time giving it a nice polish, and found a nice used leather holster for it that cleaned up quite well. Since this gun lives in the closet, and is only used at the range, I see no reason to not purdy it up. My BBQ gun was born.

Also, I live in an OC state, and attend OC dinners. Its always nice to have a good quality flashy gun to show off.

Is there a bbq watch

It may be passé now, but a few years ago, watches with "complications" were quite the thing among people who had money to burn and wanted to show it off. A $20,000 mechanical watch that, functionally, was equivalent to a $25 Ironman, may not have been called a "barbecue watch" but it was the same thing -- and frankly, a really fancy engraved gun is still a lot cheaper!

There are definitely cars like that, too. I've seen some street rods and pristine old sports cars at barbecues, and I'm certain those cars weren't daily drivers.:D

Nope. You're not the only one. To me a gun is just a tool. I don't own a single gun I bought for looks. I wear my Glock at work, at Wal Mart, at church, and yes, at BBQs. It's a life preservation tool, not a fashion accessory. Not to mention that I don't think of BBQs as some special event to wear something unique for. BBQing is just one way to cook food in a delicious way. I attach no special significance to either BBQs or the firearm one wears to them. Kingofthehill's comment is very telling of the difference in opinion. To me, a BBQ isn't a special event like a car show or church. It's dinner. That's it.

I picked up this nickel Detective Special (1972) last summer in excellent shape for $500and found the appropriate vintage Buckheimer holster on ebay for $20. I didn't need the gun but it caught my eye, I added a polished Tyler T-grip and the holster cleaned up nice. It is my "Sunday" gun, I wear it if we're going to dinner or visiting my parents or the in-laws, and to the occassional BBQ. Not as fancy as a "real" BBQ gun but I like the way it looks. It works for me and the price was reasonable.

Shop used, get some stamping tools from Tandy, make your own holster.

It's the only way to be sure! $500 isn't a lot of cash. A nice set of grips and a tooled holster can dress up anything but a Glock, which has no business at a BBQ.

Still BBQ is about sharing friendships and food, having a neat piece to show off is only a small part of it.

Down South, where we are still free, BBQs are large and extravagant social events put on by churches, fire houses, neighborhoods, etc. They are not simply small gatherings of family and close friends to eat dinner, but a large social event in the community. As such, you wear nice clothes, drive your nice car, and of course, openly carry your nice gun.

Good God, what IS IT with people and that :cuss: CZ-82?
Everywhere you turn...
I mean, come on the CZ-50 would be more interesting:)

There still are people for which the concept of tradition is not lost. Sort of like removing your hat indoors or holding doors for women who appreciate it as the sign of respect it is meant to be.
I'm from Michigan, we don't see much in the way of BBQ guns here but the concept intrigues me.
.... 'course I'm old and possibly easily intrigued.

I start off assuming used. I know $500 isn't a lot of cash, but I thought it would bring out some of the more unique ideas, which I would say it has.

This thread has given me some ideas that I wouldn't have otherwise had, namely cap and ball revolvers, and having my single six engraved (don't think I could do that though, it was a gift, and it has too much sentimental value). I appreciate all the ideas, keep them coming!

MCgunner, that's purdy. I like that other setup, an 1860, is it, at the beginning of this thread.
I wish we had barbeques to get invited to so I'd have an excuse to gussy up something. Only barbequer around I know of is me.

Maybe I do have a BBQ gun after all. Thought about this last night and yes i may have one. When we have a BBQ pig you would give that pig a little extra for a couple weeks and then take my old 22 colt huntsman and lean over the pin and grab an ear put a round behind that pigs ear. Pull it out ,bleed it, scald it ,gut it. wash it and on the BBQ grill it would go. Does the count as a BBQ gun. hehe

That's a pretty tight budget, these days.

How about a Colt SAA Italian clone in nickel for around $350? Add a used floral carved holster and belt for $100 or so and you should be good to go. Might even be able to add a set of fake ivory or pearl stocks and stay near budget.

Despite having previously lived in Austin for years and having lived in the South for my entire adult life, I've never heard of a "BBQ" gun. Sounds like it'd be the J frame in my back pocket. But, notwithstanding that, I get the idea. So, what I'd suggest would be a LeMat revolver or a Howdah pistol. Those would get conversation started! Cherry's here in G' boro has some items you may wish to consider. Enjoy.

Some guns are things of beauty. Why would you keep them in a safe? I own guns that have so many dings and rubs that dropping them on rocks might not show any new marks. I also have a few that I could wear at formal functions, along with a tux and pearly cufflinks (although I don't own any of those). I shoot them all, and carry the pretty ones when I feel like it. I do need a few more "BBQ" holster rigs to go with my guns.
