    Hello,

Considering a straight octagon .50 barrel, 1-70 twist.. What would be the advantage of a 42'' barrel over a 36'' one?

    Thanks!

Nothing except a 6 inch longer sight radius. 70 inch twist is a little slow for
a 50 ins't it? You must really going to pour the powder to it. I had a 66 twist
in a 50 once. Took 110 grs of FFF to get it to shoot good.

Green Mountain seems to have only that twist rate for 7/8 barrels, in 36 or 42''.. I would have preferred even a 1-48, or 1-56... Haven't bought yet.. Colerain has a 35'' gain twist (variable twist) ending at 1-48 at the muzzle, but they are in no hurry to answer emails..
I'd prefer to be able to shoot both short conicals and PRB, but if the slow twist is that much better for accuracy with PRB, then that'll be it..

It might be worth asking Buckeye Barrels what they may have or can get.
They sell Rice Straight Match Grade barrels:

There are also links to various barrel types and other manufacturers in the left hand column of the page linked above.
