Lots of barrels just like Bolt carrier groups (sheesh)anyway I'm building a 556/223 mid range 100-5-600 yard rifle, back in the Sandy Hook days I bought all the 55,60 grain speer,Hornady bullets my lgs had, mixed stuff vmax, soft points and cannalure, plinking stuff...I reload and have 3 ar*s I'm Wana do a person 18 or 20 inch barrel......lots to choose from twist, length,ss,bull, way to many options,,,top of the line cheap ones, mid range priced ones...I don,t Wana cheap out but I don't want pay top dollar either...any info would be helpful.....T

Drunkeneez translation...he has a ton of 55-60 grain bullets, wants a shortish precision build that isnt top of the line but is above ebay grade....has no clue as to what options in barrels would work bestish for that set up....

Least i THINK thats what he said....

My vote 1-8 twist, 20", heavy profile, fluted if you like the way it looks.

I buy cheap crap, the other guys have better suggestions for brands.

I didn't translate "person" to "precision," so that was an aspect I missed - although my barrel recommendations remain the same...

My vote 1-8 twist, 20"

For "semi-precision" and shooting 55-60grn pills, 1:8" in a 20" tube. I agree with @LoonWulf in spirit, I think, about the fluted heavy profile, except I don't like the muzzle heavy balance of barrels larger than 0.750" gas blocks, so lean more torwards National Match and HBar profiles - heavy or full diameter up to the gas block, then 0.750" for the block and out to the muzzle. Dissipates heat well, steadies on target well, but doesn't have an extra 1/4lb of metal hanging at the nose. Fluting an 0.830" or 0.920" barrel forward of the block helps, but I've never been able to fall in love with the balance of any 0.920.

Check out Odin Works barrels out of Boise, ID. I have 2, both Wylde chambered, heavy barrels and they're awesome. They're also guaranteed 1 MOA barrels. Good people to deal with and they're very fast. You can find their barrels for a little less money from good retailers. They really are an awesome barrel.

I just put a pair of Odin's together for my bro-in-law. It cost as much as any Shilen, Kreiger, Wilson, White Oak, Bison, or BHW I've ever bought, and they both shoot circles AROUND these other brands - which in a barrel, isn't a good thing.

Not impressed for the money. Maybe we got two bad ones. They do shoot 1MOA, but that's not a hard bar to clear.

Thanks LoonWulf you nailed It! Could a swore I spelled precision correctly but my tablet must have spelled checked.Anyway that's what I'm moving forward to...I saw a Wilson sniper barrel that had a .938 gas port I believe that's what I read first I've heard of that size what does that size mean. Are criterion barrels Decent? Lots of barrels makers out there for Sure! I hate beating myself up over choosing a barrel, I have a top of the line JP LRP in 308,so you'd think I'd be able to choose a barrel. Don't Wana spend that much again...once again thanks

Criterion is top end. I've never owned one myself as I've never seen them do anything the brands I own won't do, but they do very, very accurate barrels and uppers.

0.938" gas block is the diameter of the barrel at the gas block position, and then similarly, very heavy in front of the block and to the muzzle. "Standard" for an AR is 0.750", so you have a skinny muzzle. Then a semi-bull profile is usually 0.830", with 0.920" muzzle for full diameter bull barrels. Very muzzle heavy.

Buy once, cry once. If you expect precision, you're going to spend $250-300+ on the barrel.

Thanks..what size gas block would fit the Wilson? That's my price range even a Lil more......was looking at a Midway USA flyer then went to the website and read reviews on their AR Stoner barrels bad reviews as in having to re-drill gas port s due to flashing or wrong size inexpensive tho....I'm a mechanic by trade and have always bought the best tools available Snap on ect. So really I'm just answering my own question and just cry once just like with my 2 Dillon presses...... I have a Sigsauer 21inch barrel 1-10 twist dmr 556 it's a piston gun wanted to do a direct impingement gun. Thanks for all replies!

Wilson Arms barrels offer an excellent value. I built a heavy critter with a 22" Wilson 4140 bull barrel, very pleased with it.
I'd second that. I have a Wilson Match on my Varminter. I believe it may be the most accurate rifle I've ever had. I got another one for my new AR, which is probably exactly what he's looking for. 18" light profile. Double duty as HD and target/Varminter.

I have been giving some thought to building another rifle with a Black Hole Weaponry barrel. I like the smoother recoil that you get from a rifle length gas system so, I've been looking at an this 18" barrel.

I have spent from $70 to $300 on AR barrels. All have been good. The $70 barrel was 16" 1/9 M4 cut from Anderson that would hold groups from 1.5 to 2" at 100 yds. The build cost under $500. Not bad for a cheap build.
The rifle I like shooting the most has a PSA chrome-lined barrel that I had cut from 20" to 16". With iron sights it will shoot 1" groups at 100 yds with most ammo.
When it comes down to it. Build a rifle that you will want to shoot. If your a bench shooter or hunt from a stand then that 20" heavy barrel would be great. But if your going to have boots on the ground the 18" mid weight might be better.

Just built a lightweight 18" with a Faxon barrel. Seems to be shooting well so far. Ballistic Advantage is another I've heard very good things about recently.

But of course your big names will be fantastic as well.

Iron sights, 1" groups, with most ammo. Hm. I'd be pretty impressed if I could manage that.
A friend of mine and my son are the ones that can really shoot. They were using five different brands of 62 Gr Ammo.
I can't shoot all that good anymore, not after cancer and radiation treatments that have left my neck and shoulder messed up. I'm lucky if I can hold a 4" group at 50 yes.

OK Im thinking about the Wilson super sniper barrel...thoughts...I no its gona be heavy but bench shooting, and prone..layin in a field waitin for a groundhog or a coyote

I've been very happy with ER Shaw barrels and they don't cost an arm and a leg. In fact I'd go so far as to say you shouldn't spend more on a "better" barrel until your shooting has progressed to the point you could be confident that it was the barrel holding you back, until then, spend the savings on better ammo and more range time.

Black Hole Weaponry, Odin Works, and X-Caliber barrels are ones I see getting used all the time. I prefer X-Caliber they aren't cheap but aren't expensive and the X- Caliber barrels I own are great shooters all .75 MOA and better for 5 shots at 100 yards.
