anyone here heard of this mount or tried it for you optics on you m1a? they are supposed to return to zero for people who like taking their scope on and off. i like the simplicity of the design...not having to remove the stripper clip ect.

I wouldn't trade mine for anything else on the market. I don't have to mess with the clip guide to mount it. I keep the tool in the buttstock where the cleaning kit goes. It does hold zero without a hitch. I haven't tried to remount after zeroing though.

Basset Mount

I have the mount, High Mount with Picatinny Rail -- Well designed and installs easy but I have not tested the return to zero.

I purchased for the following reason:
1. Basset customer service is very good/great -- they did not include the tool with shipment, I emailed and they called me with a couple of hours to solve the problem -- tool received very quickly, and the tool is small and fits easily in the butt stock.

2. Since I only have one M1A this allows me to shoot scope one day and then shoot a CMP type match (iron sights) the next without having the re-zero the scope -- since 308 is not cheap this has a cost savings attached.

3. I choose the picatinny rail version so that I have a little adjustment for eye relief if I need it.

4. Not having to screw with the "Clip Guide" is another bonus.

Very happy with purchase -- had other options but found the Basset the best for my needs.

uk wilcats....what kind of scope are you running on your M1A? im trying to figure out where to start looking for a scope for my M1A.

mshootnit....do you have the regular mount or the picatinny one? and which is recomened?

UK - you said picatinny is better for having a more flex in ey relief? and do any of you guys use a cheek weld on the stock....if so what kind?

I have the low rail mount. I am running a Leup VX3 3-10X40mm in Leupold PRW rings (low I believe.) Damn nice setup.

well lets see some pictures guys! i want to see some setups. i want to scope my M1A and want ideas. i am leaning towards a bassett mount (low picatinny i guess) and a leupold optic. not sure which leupold to buy....decent priced one with at least x6 mag i guess. and i assume i will need a blackhawk cheek weld for the stock...not sure what thickness i will need....nothing too high i hope. anyway, im excited....seeing some pics of some handsome set ups would be great.

Mount I am using -- http://www.bassettmachine.com/prod_smpr.htm

-- High so I can still use the iron sights
-- Picatinny just in case I needed versatility -- also give me a greater selection of "Rings" -- just not weaver.
-- Since the Picatinny rail has slots every 0.4 inch (give or take) I have the ability to put my rings where I need/want them -- on the Weaver Style mount the rings are at a fixed location

Scope I am using -- Bushnell Elite 10x40 -- http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=129037

-- I have this scope on about 4 rifles and really like it
-- Very tough and simple design
-- Do not realy need variable and do not need low power -- this is a 7.62x51 rifle designed to shoot a longer distances
-- Very in-expensive, I ordered this one on amazon.com for about $165

Cheek Pad

-- My first cheek pad was a Blackhawk that tied on with string/shoelaces. It held well but the string was to thick to go under the butt plate -- http://www.blackhawk.com/product/Rifle-Cheek-Pad,605,1406.htm

-- Purchased and installed yesterday a Blackhawk Cheek Pad that uses Velcro straps and it does go under the hinged butt plate -- http://www.blackhawk.com/product/HawkTex-Tactical-Cheek-Pad-Adjustable,606,1406.htm -- so far I like it but have to shoot it

I will try to take pictures tonight.

hey thanks UK wildcats. i looked up the Bushnell Elite 3200 Tactical and the reviews are pretty solid! so that is a good optic for the .308 huh? the price is nice! how durable would you say it is? would you say it would do ok in snow or rain? can you get a lens cover for it?

and how do you like the fixed magnification? is it a more simple design?

-- I like the optic and the Mil-Dot are nice for ranging -- only have used if on a 223 bolt for Prairie Dogs - at 100 yards the PD is two (2) Mil-Dots, at 200 yards they are one (1) MD, great for quick ranging.

the price is nice

-- I get mine for generally under $180 but I see the price has gone up a little. Still 1/2 the price of a SuperSniper and alot cheaper than compariable scopes -- These were the Baush and Lomb Elite scope design before Bushnell purchase B&L

how durable would you say it is? would you say it would do ok in snow or rain?

-- Extremely durable, have never heard of one failing -- heard that they can easily take a 50BMG -- not sure though.

can you get a lens cover for it?

-- I have Butler Creeks on all mine, Midway shows the size on their site -- You might want to get one size smaller for the eyepiece, mine is a little large so I put a little electrical tape on the eyepiece so that the BC holds.

By the way I turned the scope 90 degree CCW's so that ejected cased do not hit the turret -- do not know if this is a problem but I saw no reason why not to do it.

ukwildcat.....nice pics! that is the exact set up i want for my M1A! the bassett mount with the bushnell optic. do you like the fixed magnification on it? some people have told me to get adjustable but i dont know if that makes things more complex. im not a ballistics expert so i dont know if you want to be doing adjusting all the time. is it bothersome to shoot that scope at 100 yds? will it focus at close ranges like 50 yds? i am mulling over the idea of getting a bushnell 3200 in the 10x40 like you have or the adjustable magnification.

also i like the blackhawk cheek weld. what is that, a 1" raise?

nice rifle!

also....the mount looks fairly low for the high mount. you can still see the irons with that set up? and do you recommend the high mount for a fixed mag scope so you can aim at close distances?????

thanks.

Fixed Magnification -- Yes I do like it, Does make it easier to use (do not have to worry my power settings when trying to mil-dot range. Should also make the scope more durable and weigh less -- also makes the scope shorter since the magnification generally adds length to the eyepiece.

At 100 yards no problem -- probably would only have a problem at close range (below 50 yards) which is not what I am using the M1A for.

Focus -- have had no problems -- the focus ring is on the eyepiece so I do have to take off the BC to focus.

Blackhawk Cheek Pad -- yes about 1 inch -- seems to work well but could actually be a little thicker since I have the tall basset mount.

The Bassett is the high mount and I can use the iron sights -- just have to remove the cheek pad to get my eyes down. You could use either mount with the fixed scope -- generally chose the high so that I could you irons in case I have an issue with the scope and don't want to remove the scope -- but with the Basset removing the scope is not a problem.

uk wildcats....thanks for all your info. i am going to repeat your setup exactly, except i might opt for the low mount bassett....but i must say the high mount looks pretty nice. i thought it would stick up higher than that. where did you get your scope rings and scope lens covers? do you have a link for that?

Skipbo you must keep in mind that if you go with the low mount, you will not be able to use your sights like you can with the high mount.

birddog...is that the mount you have? the high mount? i guess i was thinking the lower the better so i dont have to get too high of a cheek rest.

I think the difference between the high and the low mount is about 1/4 inch -- either one is fine but I wanted the option to use the iron sights.

Scope Rings -- I had them in the "Extra" box -- Millett Rings -- I have a set of Warne Rings on order just have not come in. I belong to a club that orders direct from a distrubutor, just sometimes it takes a while to get things in.

Millet Rings Installed -- http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=542758
(Think I got them at Dick's Sporting Goods)

Warne Rings on Order -- http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=918191

The Butler Creek covers -- probably through the club however they are available everywhere just need to get the right size -- According the MidwayUSA the correct size is Objective #29, Eye Piece is #13 (but is a little large -- electrical tape fixed that).

Most Online Vendors carry -- MidwayUSA is where I would start, not always the cheapest but they are very easy to deal with.
