A short range report

I've been working on getting accurate load data for the 125gr Hornady HAP bullet. This is a moderate recoil load in my Sig M11-A1 9mm pistol, 3.9" barrell.

Load# 002_1511 125gr Hornady HAP, 5.0gr BE-86, Win WSPP Primer, Mixed Range Brass, 1.110" COL.10 rounds @ 10 yards, open sights, used sandbag rest.

This load data will go into my "Accurate Load Data" file, I am happy with the accuracy off a rest,
now just have to see if I can get close to this accuracy off hand:D:D

JD, that is a good load and some good shooting.

Are those 1" squares? If they are then it seems you gun is shooting about 1.5" to the right at 10 yards. So if you push your rear sight about .02375" to the left, then you should be spot on.

vaalpens,
Yes, the squares are 1", thanks for suggesting drifting my sight!!

JD, it is scary if you don't have the right tools. I had to do it for my P229 357sig since it was the only gun shooting to the right. So for me it was using a brass rod drifting it a little bit at a time until it was better.

Sorry if I "drifted" off topic a bit.

Well, back to topic.

I still have some of the HAP bullets you and Dudedog sent me. Maybe I should try a few in 9mm with your BE-86 load data. I will report back after I tested it for accuracy.

That's pretty good for 10 rounds even from a sand bag on a rest.

This was my last outing with my BE-86 loads with my old SR-9, 7 yds, off hand, unsupported.

BE-86 5.5 gr with 124gr RMR hardcore match round nose @ 1.125 OAL.

6 shots and as always, I have my POS flyer.

The target has a 1"bullseye.

I'm likin' it, TT :D Those RMR HCM bullets are gettin' pretty popular ~ got my first order & hope to get results as good as yours & jell-dog's ;)

I appreciate the comments guys, I just wish I could ditch that flyer for once in my life.

They are so reasonably priced too, in my opinion.

Finally got to run a very quick test of my BE-86 loads with 115gr X-treme RN bullets. I found that about 5.6gr was a good load for my guns. Mixed brass, CCI primers, about 1.35 COL.

What was really interesting was that none of the loads were bad, but between 5.4gr and 5.8gr groups tightened up slightly. I think I'll try a few at 5.5gr and call it good.

No chrono, and target was at about 7 yards as I was also testing out some new sights I recently installed.

(the group on the left of the target at about 8 o'clock is from my .45acp 200gr loads with CFE Pistol through my wife's 25-2 revo)

Freezing cold in CO today, about 21 degrees F late in afternoon. Fingers were half numb...

Interesting. I went back and looked at my data, I ran a ladder load test from 5.2 - 5.8. I found the 5.4 and 5.6gn loads to give the lowest SD of 9.3 (each) and spread of 20-21fps. I got 1085 avg with 5.4gn, and 1102 fps with 5.6gn. I went with 5.4gn for production runs, since these were primarily just plinking loads for my wife. I seat these to 1.150" COL. I don't think I did an accuracy test on these since I don't have that noted.

It would be interesting to do a temp coefficient test for BE86. I have not shot any when it has been that cold. I went to the range yesterday and it was 65-70 degrees while we were there - we've had record high temps lately.

Just ran some xtreme 115 rn plated through Cz 75. 5.6 at 1.130. Got high 1197, low 1182, avg 1188, Es 15 and sd 7. 30 degrees and sunny. I agree 5.4 or 5.5 seems best for 115.

This was a very informative thread for me, and I finally got a chance to chrono some BE86 this weekend, so I figured I'd share here.

CZ P09 (4.5" barrel) 9mm
RMR 124gr RN thick plated
1.135 OAL
same headstamp brass
S&B primers

BE86 5.3gr
Shots: 8
Max : 1136
Min : 1120
ES : 16
Avg : 1128
SD : 5

BE86 5.4gr
Shots: 6
Max : 1163
Min : 1135
ES : 28
Avg : 1145
SD : 11

BE86 5.6gr
Shots: 8
Max : 1190
Min : 1171
ES : 19
Avg : 1180
SD : 6

The primers showed no flattening or cratering or anything on any of the loads.

I use a magnetospeed chrono, and always run 10 shot strings, but I got a few errors (over 3000 fps) so I had to delete some shots. First time that has ever happened, not sure why, so I'll have to look into it. Otherwise the data looks good.

I was looking for something hotter than my 128 PF gamer loads of N320, Titegroup, etc., just for fun, and I have to say I am very happy so far. I didn't really test for accuracy, but I shot some great (for me) groups offhand at 10-15 yards. I'll probably go ahead and load a bunch at 5.3gr.

I did some testing of my first 38/357 loads, and in one load I tried BE-86. Following is the BE-86 load in 38special:

Ruger SP101, 3", 38spl+p
COL: 1.423"
HSM, 125gr, PFN, BE86, 5.4gr, CCI500
Average: 767
ES: 40
SD: 16.1
Force: 163
PF: 95
Velocities: 751, 791, 756, 776, 764

vaalpens, that looks like a nice load as far as accuracy goes!

Thanks.

The testing was only done at 7 yards with a 3" SP101, but I am planning to test them at 10 yards next time. It is possible that I just got lucky with the grouping especially with an ES number of 40.

I often wish that when I'm at my indoor range and shooting good groups like we have posted here that I could put another target out at 25yds, behind my 7yd target, to see what the groups look like on down the road.

I can see the target well at 7yds.

It would be neat to compare that 25yd target shot through a 7yd target with one I shoot at 25yds away. I'll bet there is a big difference for me.

This thread has been a awesome resource for BE-86 and I would like to help contribute to the collective knowledge. I was able to Chrono rounds this weekend and here are the results (which mainly validate) for a IDPA load of 125PF (min) for SSP/ESP which I found here on THR.

Continuing from my last post, I also got my hands on some 147gr RMR FP Match bullets and wanted to test a range of loads to meet IDPA SSP/ESP PF. Here are the results. I wanted to shoot 10 shots per load, but my fancy-shmancy bluetooth enabled chrono/app had other plans.

You might want to note when you are posting compressed loads.

With RMR 124 gr HM RN at 1.160" OAL, I got 5.2 gr of BE-86 as max case fill. Once I determine the max/working OAL/COL for my load development, I always calculate the max case fill before conducting powder work up - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=9655361#post9655361

If you are testing compressed loads, it would help other members/guests to know that you are working with compressed loads.
I didn't think it was compressed, but I only eye-balled it, so it very well may be. My press is set up for .45 at the moment so I can't go back and confirm, but just looking at your calculations, I notice that you are measuring the bullets as .680"? My RMR 124gr HM RN are more like .585". A tenth of an inch might make a big difference in case capacity.

My apologies. You are correct. I erred by posting .680" instead of .580" for the bullet length.

5.6 gr at 1.135" OAL will not compress the powder charge with 124 gr RMR HM RN bullet.

< corrected previous post and will PM Walkalong to correct post in the link >

How were your groupings with 147? Mine are terrible with BE86. I even tried different lengths and charges as well. Titegroup is better for me with the 147g bullets.

Apologies for the late reply! We shall find out sometime is weekend. I am going to try out the 147s with 3.7gr of BE-86 and need to reset the powder drop and chunk out some rounds.
