Be Careful

This sounds to me like a case of unsafe gun handling pure & simple. An XD has a striker block. The trigger has to be pulled & the grip safety depressed at the same time to deactivate it. The story says either it was mishandled or dropped. I would wager that the owner didn't clear the chamber then dropped the gun when it went off suprising them. All it takes is one idiot to make us all look bad.

Officer, why is your finger on the trigger?
It looked to me like he was trying to remove the slide but didn't know how to do it.

Yeah, somebody pulled that trigger. Maybe there's a security camera to prove what happened. I love it when they make it sound like guns (or SUV's) try to kill people all by themselves.

I didn't notice this the first time through, but yes, the barrel and recoil spring/guide rod are missing. Looks like somebody removed them from the slide to render the weapon inoperable, then slipped the slide back onto the frame. On XD's, putting the slide back on the frame without all the required parts inside can make getting it back off a little difficult.

God the moron in that video has his fingers ALL OVER the trigger while trying to do what exactly?

Wow. I cringe everytime I get her the phrase "Thought it was unloaded.". I know you treat every gun like it is loaded but I can tell you with my MP there is absolutely no way that gun could be loaded and me not know it. You take the clip out, pull back the slide and you have a FULL view of the chamber. It is not magic.

Then the cops handling the gun, finger on or near the trigger. I am betting that is exactly what the dude did to discharge it. Pulled it out, when to pull the slide back and had his finger on the trigger. That the cop was doing it, that was scary.

The cop had his finger on the trigger to either remove or install the slide. He was not clearing the gun, he was disassembling or reassembling it, further evidenced by the fact that there is no barrel or guiderod installed in the gun he is handling.

That is an XD. At 0:53 you can clearly see the cocked status indicator at the back of the slide. And there is no way in heck the gun owner "fumbled it, dropped it, and it went off". Somebody had the grip safety depressed, and actuated the trigger. Plain and simple. GUNS don't just go off.

Fixed it for ya

It's a good thing nobody was seriously hurt. This is a prime example of why you should TRIPLE CHECK the weapons you fly with before you get to the airport. Also, that crime scene investigator needs to learn how to rack a slide ;)

Agree there! Looks like he's really fumbling with trying to strip it.
