"From what I've seen Wilson Combat, Nighthawk Custom, Les Baer, and Ed Brown are the cream of the crop..."

They are really, really good production guns IMO. Excellent QC.

Here's an older pic of mine.

Finish is Diamond Black.

I didn't own a 1911 until I ended up with this Kimber Raptor because my daughter thought it "way cool".

US 1911A1

This is the most beautiful 1911 in the world in my eyes. It has served my family for 3 generations.

Honestly now, I suggest you stop looking at what the gang-banger use and formulate your own opinion.

You must not be a sixgun fan as many of the most beautiful, classy and functional ones have been offered with nickel as a standard finish.

The Single Action Army, Colt Python, S&W 29, 27, 19, etc. the list could go on and on.

Nickel and sixguns are like peanut butter and jelly they just do together. I don't think many gang-bangers are packing pinned and recessed, nickel Model 27's.

?

I'm starting my quest for my first 1911. All my guns are military-style so far, so I think it's time for a change.

Am I the only one to sense the irony in that statement?

Yes, but I think alot of people equate "black" or "tactical" handguns like those offered by Sig or HK as military type firearms. Just my guess.

That is my opinion.. Anything that people like that that use seems tainted to me. Having a bright nickle handgun is like wearing 42" waisted girbaud shorts that come down to your ankles when you only have a 30" waist. Isn't that my own opinion?

I am a huge six gun fan. Six guns look great when they are blued or stainless. And if you get a single action army, it should have color case hardening on the frame and blue everywhere else.

I just think nickle plating looks tacky and gaudy. My opinion; I'm not asking you to agree.

Coming out an saying that only a ganger-banger pimp would use a nickel plated gun is asking for a respone. Opinions are fine and if you give yours then expect it to be challenged if its abrasive.

If someone says "Glocks are tupperware" then they should expect a respone and shouldn't be surprised when someone does.

You admit you like military guns, and you know you want more. Tell me this isn't beautiful.;)

Who said nickel-plated guns belong to 2pac and whatnot?

You sure you're not talking gold-plated?

I think I like nickel-plated because I saw a SW PC revolver that was nickel plated with beautiful dark red handles and said, "That's what I want my next gun to look like!" It was more of a work of art than a gun and it was awesome!

sorry - what I meant by "military-style" should have been said as "EBP". I know the 1911 is very much a military gun...

"Military style" to me means all black, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's FOR the military, or that the military ONLY use black pistols.... but you know what I mean.

In other words, all of my other pistols are designed with functionality in mind - not looks and as such they look like...... well..... guns.

I want something different. Not all black IOW.

Another one of my tacky and gaudy pimp pieces:

Sorry - this one isn't nickel, but it is bright - hope Matt doesn't mind me posting it too...

Earlier I let you know that I like stainless. I just do not like bright nickel.

These are on sale at Ebay, by the way:

I don't like highly-polished metal in general - the watch on my wrist, my knives or my firearms. Perhaps because it reminds me of the cheap plastic toys of my childhood which were painted in a mirror-polished silver in an attempt to hide their very cheapness - who know? ;)

no, I'm talking the kind of finish that Speer GD ammo has on the shell-case. That dull nickel finish.... then couple that with some nice grip work using beautiful hardwoods.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that this is going to have to be a custom job.

I'll have a find a 1911 that fits the basics, and then take it to a gunshop.... unless you guys know of a better way?

The only way to go!

SA Pro

This is was built for the FBI or civilian use. At the time of manufacture it was unknown which would get it. It is as smooth as silk and flawless!

Nice looking Kimber! I like those CDP soap bar type pistols but always wondered about the aluminum frame. I guess it will hold up well but I've never held one.

About the nickel-plating:

I will concede that I am a young guy and did not understand that back in the day that might've been the only option for someone wanting better corrosion protection than parkerizing. I guess some still hold a special place in their heart for that look.

Just an opinion... nickle-plated handguns around here usually belong to people like 2Pac and Biggie...
Talk like that will keep you from being invited to the better Texas Barbecues.

It's not even that I care about corrosion.

I just think that matte finish combined with an elegant wood handle looks classy.

When I think of "gangsta" style guns, I typically think gold-plated, or with tons of engravings all over it.

Ironically though, done by the right person (ie: SW PC) , whether it is considered "gangsta style" or not, engravings can really add to the collector value and resale value.

I'm not looking for that though. I'm looking for a gun that would basically look equally in place in a fancy library or something. ie: something that would look classy when wearing a suit.

You know?
