Beaver Cleaver- gun nut!

Found this pro gun celebrity site (url posted in another thread) which listed Jerry Mathers (The Beaver- if you don't know, you're too new) as pro gun.

Anyone recall seeing an episode where the Beaver goes to an all girl party and he's really bummed out about it- until he wanders into the girl's father's study and finds all the guns on the wall. And the father is in there and he takes a few of the guns down and lets the Beav handle them. I think one was a Sharp's rifle, I forget the other.

The show ends with Beaver telling Wally he can't wait to go back to his new friend's (the girl) house so he can hang with Dad in the study and check out all the guns.

Recently saw this on TV Land- just imagine that show being made today.

I saw one where an uncle wanted to give Wally a rifle - but he wanted to turn it down because he just could not accept "such a neat gift!" The tone was that he thought the rifle was cool, but it was just "too much".

So was I. I kept waiting for the anti gun zinger at the end and it didn't come, really drove home the point of how much this country has changed since then- and surely not for the better.

How the values have changed... Not for us mind you but for the media. Back in the '50s guns were O.K. and one could mail order them. The media today protrays the firearm as the root source of all evil and violence. Forget drugs, gang activity and its associated violence - all of which is glorified by the media in its hunger to drive up ratings.

Many of those TV Land classic sitcoms have a healthy attitude towards guns. Andy Griffith's sheriff's office scenes are often shot against the gun rack. The Beverly Hillbillies guns are part of their lives (even in California!). Yes, 4v50, the values of even sitcoms reflect a remarkable change in a short amount of time.

I saw that "Leave it to Beaver" and I was saddened to think what we've become. It is depressing how successful the anti-gun propaganda has been.
I'm reminded of an "Andy of Mayberry" in which Opie and a friend were on the front porch w/ Andy and Andy let Opie handle his revolver (after unloading it for him, of course).

One of my favorite Andy Griffith episodes was when he had a new girl friend and invited her to go shoot some trap with him. He was acting all macho, after all she was only a woman and wasn't expected to be able to shoot at all! She played along with him, but when the shooting started she bested his shotgunning by a country mile.

All during the show, I was saying to myself that she looked very familiar. The credits said she was Gail Davis who also played Annie Oakley in the old TV show. So, she was doing the actual shooting during the AG show, and doing it very well. No need for a standin shooter for her.
