Happy Sunday. I have a SR2,(using the 22 barrel) and my groups are terrible. Good rest, no wind, Gamo TS-22 competition pellets. Beeman factory scope. My groups are about 4 inches apart at 20 yards. Experienced shooter, rifle and pistol. I have heard that a springer has to settle down. Less than a thousand shots. Is there anything I can do to tighten these groups? Sorry for the long message!! Thanks!!

Have you cleaned your barrel?

Make sure your scope rings are not slipping; mark your mounts with a pencil as reference marks.

Make sure (frequently) your stock mounting screws are tight, but dont crush the stock. Use lock-tite or vibra-tite thread locking compound on your screws if necessary.

Try different pellets; the one's that you have not very good. Try Crosman hollow point pellets from Walmart; they are cheap and some guns like them. Or try H&N Field Target Trophy, RWS Super Domes, or JSB domed pellets.

Everything he said. Especially the pellets. Air guns are similar to .22s or really any guns in this regard. You cannot just throw any ammo in them and expect it all to be dead nuts accurate. Try different ammo.

One other thing. You say you are an experienced rifle and pistol shooter. I assume you mean powder burners. If so……..forget all that. :). While learning a spring airgun will help you be a better shooter overall, being a great PB shooter doesn’t generally translate to a spring gun shooter.

Try using a VERY light hold on the gun. Let it recoil, don’t try to control the recoil. Also use a soft rest, like a folded towel on top of your rest. The issue is that when you shoot a spring gun the pellet takes a comparative eternity to exit the bore. During that time the gun is recoiling foward, backward and vibrating in every direction in between. If you try to over control it you are throwing the pellet in a different place every time. If you loosely hold and just let the recoil/vibration happen the pellet will sort of leave at the same place every time. It’s very counter intuitive to us powder burner folks. Look up artillery hold.

Don’t get frustrated it will take time and practice and follow through and trigger press are magnified hugely vs a “real gun”.

Take care, shoot safe, good luck
Chris

One other thing I forgot to mention about ammo. Pellets will have variation gun to gun and that variation is not simply price based / quality. You can have two equal in quality match grade pellets that cost roughly the same and are both known to be high end gear. One may shoot spectacular. One might suck. They both might be great but it’s not out of the question that your gun loves one pellet and hates the other. So just because you buy a “high end” pellet doesn’t automatically mean your gun will shoot it well. Keep in mind many pellets are sold with different head sizes within caliber and those can make a big difference as well.

Awesome points. A number of things I need to improve on. Checking and locktight will be added. Picking up a few different pellets. My biggest mistake has been that I squeeze the rifle into my shoulder right before my shot. Will take a lighter hold. Thank you!!

Well crap! Checked the screws and found one loose. The screw at the breech end on the trigger guard. Removed and added a touch of med. locktight. Re-einstalled screw. Tightens snug but the is approximately 1/8th slack in action and stock. I backed the screw out and the threads are fine. No signs of cross threading. Any ideas or thoughts! Seems like all I post on here are my problems! I appreciate you help!!!

I don’t know enough about the RS2 to speak to it. On some guns the trigger guard screws just hold the trigger guard on. Some are action screws. You might want to try to source a longer screw to see if that tightens it up.
