Been buying ammo for a gun I don't even own

Given the current ammo shortage, acquiring ammo before buying the gun is not a bad idea.

Yup- Last week, a LGS had basic "optics ready" M4-style carbines on the shelf for a somewhat inflated price, but not stupid. .223/5.56mm was nowhere to be had for any resemblance of reasonable pricing.

Oy, did you sell a kidney to purchase that (at today's prices)? I hope you landed a deal.

Though I have a few thousand rounds of various .223 and 5.56, I try not to dig into it much due to the availability and price. I want to say most of what I have was purchased for under $7/20. The PMC was closer to $5 a box. Those days are gone but will eventually return (or come close).

I'll resume purchasing and using .223/5.56 a few months after the election when the prices begin to settle into a price somewhere below the stratosphere.

I bought some .308 the other day and I don't own one yet. Hoping to buy a PSA PA10 when they have what I want back in stock.

At today’s prices, if I didn’t already own the gun, I think I would chance prices going down after the election and not pay today’s prices.
I was in a LGS today and 1,000 rounds of 5.56 was priced at $780.
I paid less than a third of that for mine.
Maybe you got yours at a good price though.

I've been finding it at Bass Pro, they just raised the price by $5 this past week, so it's $75/150.

That's .50 cents a round or $10 a box of 20. Though not a stellar price prior to covid/antifa/elections, it's quite a fair price currently.

If you think THAT is a stockpile you do have a problem

IDK, he has over 2k rounds of a cartridge he doesn't even have the firearm for yet. It's a healthy start.

I have only 3 ARs and a smidgeon over 10k of various .223 and 5.56, with about a 3rd of it being Federal XM193 or 855. Once he buys an AR, his ammuntion/firearm ratio will be close to mine.

Now when it comes to .22LR... I indeed have a stockpile, by anyone's definition.

I don't own an AR, but plan on ordering one in the future. In the meantime I've been stockpiling 5.56 ammo. I have a problem.
Good for you! An excellent start! :)

Summer'02 I noticed that Dan's Ammo was offering a decent deal on cases of Danish M2 Ball in enblocs & bandos, so I loaded up.

O'course, at the time I had no M1(s), so I felt that it was my duty to take steps to correct that situation. ;)

Its not an issue until you have loaded ammo, reloading components, and 2 sets of dies for a caliber you never intend owning.

While I do remember getting ammo and the brass as part of a package deal, I have no idea how I ended up with TWO sets of .218 Bee dies.

If you think your ammo buying habit is strange, I not only bought ammo for an AR15 I didn't have yet, I was also ordering magazines, magazine pouches, web gear, sight adjustment tools, cleaning kit supplies, and more stuff than I can remember! I even got a bayonet to go along with it! Part of my bedroom looked like a mini version of an Army-Navy Surplus store!

There's nothing wrong with putting the cart before the horse, so to speak, as long as you save enough money so you can actually buy the gun when the time comes!

dcon: Allow me to disagree with you, respectfully. You probably embarrassed quite a number of lurkers, because you are a self-starter.

Being smart helps avoid a problem or two. Before buying my first Enfield (.303 Brit) in early 2009, I First bought a case of ammo. And there was no panic at all, but it can erupt one-two days after an unpredicted, tragic event.

Why buy a car with only half a gallon in the tank (at best), and extremely high-priced fuel available--mostly--by shopping online.

Good idea buying ammo. Hope you find a nice rifle when the time is right.

Don’t forget the magazines, sling, optic and mounted light.
