I know this has probably been replayed a thousand times but I feel we can never be reminded enough about safety. I hope this area was okay to put this.

This weekend at the range I found a ruptured case on the ground. My immediate thoughts were hot load, but the neck area was begging for me to take a closer look, so I did. I took home the exploded case and rummaged through my casing until I found a close match. From my investigative work it appears someone shot a 7mm-08 in a 7mm WSM, look at the pictures below. I have a 7mm-08 case, the ruptured case, and a 7mm WSM case.

Anyway you guys be careful out there.

Thanks
BB

wow.... That is some good investigative work. With what I would say is an accurate conclusion I might add.

Hope the poor guy was wearing glasses.

Good job on that investigation, and great pix!

Looking at the middle case, I assume that it was in the rifle's chamber when it blew up. It seems to me that in order for a chambered round to have expanded and ripped out like that, the chamber would have to have done likewise.
Am I correct in that assumption?

Glad that chamber wasn't located right in front of my head.

no, 32win, the case in the middle ripped out becase at the moment of ignition the pressures inside the case pushed out in all directions. since the 7mm-08 is smaller in diameter than the 7mm wsm, the case stretched past its breaking point. i would put money on the worse thing happening to the rifle that fired that ruptured case is broken bottem metal. the chamber on that rifle is most likly intact and undamaged.

I'm betting it happens more often than one might think. There are so many different "pet" loads out now. I'm all for diversity and individuality but jeez ! Just gotta be different !

It used to be 30-06 for ground squirrels all the way up to Alaskan Kodiaks !:D

Something Similar

I once bought some hand loads (unbeknownst to me) at a gunshow in .40. Somehow a 9mm worked its way into the box of ammo, I loaded it without noticing into the mag for my HiPoint .40 carbine. When I fired the round, the casing didn't eject, which thank god I noticed. Pulled the bolt back and noticed a little casing stuck in the barrel. Tried to pull it out with my finger and noticed it was REALLY stuck, had to get a knife and pry it out thankfully the "lip" at the end of the casing was sticking out and I hooked the knife in there. When I finally got it out the front of the casing was split and expanded to about the size of the .40 barrel.

I shot a .270 round out of a 7mm mag once. I didn't load the rifle. My cousin did. I was eager to shoot something, perhaps too eager. Or too trusting.

Now I load all my own guns.
