factory engraving, what is P.V and the rest of these markings?

Just picked this gun up and wondering if the experts here can decipher these markings. Some of my pictures somehow turned into videos, with this apple phone Gun is in open sights configuration, rear sight is a side mounted peep. Front is a hooded bead. Butt plate is engraved African Buffalo Horn! A761B144-70E7-44F2-B941-6439E6CE70D5.jpeg

So in conclusion: This is an FN Mauser Factory Sporter Deluxe in 30-06, made in 1952. I saw where someone referred to this as a 41Z...not sure about that. It has factory engraving all around and the serial numbers match.

From the right side only. I can take more later if needed. Peep Sight installed. Sight mount with peep sight removed. 90EC3143-92B4-4E5B-906D-3EEC3B948D23.jpeg E511401F-5AFC-4083-B980-9E45812BE1C3.jpeg

Neither accommodation, either for the clip or thumb.

Very nice!

I'm thinking it's a Browning High Power.

I can only barely see the bolt release. How about the serial number?

My own High Power .30-06 came out of Alaska too.

Interesting to me that an owner put the sight on such a wonderfully engraved gun. Does your barrel have no attachment point for a Safari or Express sight?

Great guns.

Todd.

It would be interesting to hear about ordering a rifle engraved, was it a special order, or a class of higher priced rifles they offered?

Very beautiful rifle! I have found a bit of information on this FN. A Washington, DC importer, Firearms International, began importing these rifles from Germany in 1948. All of these imports had ' Chrome Vanadium Steel ' stamped on the barrel. Your FN was manufactured in 1952, as shown on the barrel. The rifle is all original, including the peep sight mounting holes on the receiver, which were added to satisfy the importer. This was done at the factory in Germany. The stock is also original. The engraving was done as a pre-FN stamping on the receiver, possibly another importer order. Some were done by custom engravers by special order. Most of these engravings can be tied to the engraver. The more elaborate, the higher the values. 1952 saw the first FN Mauser barreled actions imported into the U.S. as well.

Anything made by FN - Fabrique National (in the Herstal area of Liege province, Belgium) - is from Belgium. However, they are famous for making the 1898 Mauser action, with slight alterations, like not including mounts for charger clips, not cutting out the 'thumb recess' and the like for sporting arms.

Delightful arms. Excellent workmanship.

Yes. FN did make John Browning designed handguns for years. It established FN as an arms and munitions manufacturer. That whole story is a bit of firearms history; too detailed and enchanting to be told here. Look it up on line or any one of several books on that subject alone.

And shotguns: B25 (Superposed), the Auto 5, and the Double Auto (designed by Val Browning), among others.
