Bench Rest shooting @100yrds

I went shooting today,with My PTR and M1a.I shot at 100 yrds using a bench rest.This felt like cheating because it is so easy to stay in the black.So the question is it cheating?

shoot at and keep your shots inside target smaller than "the black" and get back to us

What he means is in competition speak “100 yd bench rest” means a hole in a hole in a hole.

For me, shooting off the bench is to see how accurate a particular gun is; or when I'm working on reloads, to see which loads do what.

Yes, lose the bench. 100 yards standing, crouching, neeling, prone, during Spetznaz backflips would be better practice.

Use the bench to determine the best ammo/load for your intended use.

After that , practice what you expect to do in the field. This includes shooting from improvised rest and shooting sticks.

No, it isn't cheating. We use the bench for checking loads, and setting a zero. I think what you are asking, "Do the skills practiced at the bench, transfer to reliable shooting in the field?" Can shooting really be this easy?! In my case, yes. I fire from the bench using a bi-pod and sand bag. I hunt in the field via the same means. Practice the way you hunt.

You didn't shoot the rifle from that bench, did you? The bench is just a convenient place to put your ammo and beer.

All my instructors said..."the bench proves what the rifle and load can do. The positions prove what you can do". Now that you know the gun shoots good, get it off the bench and get to work.

The apple seed guys say to shoot at a 1 inch square @ 82 feet...standing Its hard. I tried and I'm not happy with my target. I need work!

Good excuse for another range trip!

A 1" square at 82 feet? I don't think I can even SEE a 1" square at 82 feet.

I do that all the time but it's really 75ft (25yards) then I move it out to 50yrds then to 100yrds. I'm pretty sure 25meters is where they get the 82ft from but good luck finding a range marked in Meters here in the USA.

1" square at 25 meters isn't too hard from a bench or prone, but standing, off-hand, it's tough.
