I just read that Beretta is introducing an intermediate-size Cougar dubbed the 8000L. From Beretta's website, this looks like an excellent CCW. The grip is shorter and more concealable than the full-size Cougar but is longer than the Mini-cougar, allowing for a more secure grip.

The problem is it's currently available only in 9mm, according to their cusotmer service dept; I haven't received a reply as to when/if other calibers will be available for this model. I'd think Beretta would offer more powerful calibers since both the Cougar and Mini-Cougar have several choices. Either .40 or .45 would work and I'm also considering .357 SIG, which I think would be great in this gun as well.

My question is has anyone heard anything about the 8000L model and eventual availability of other calibers?

Also, more importantly, I know Beretta has an excellent reputation but what's the general reliability of the Cougar line? Are they as good as other Beretta products? I searched both THR and TFL, but didn't really find anything in particular.

Any info would be appreciated.

I think there are a bunch of threads about the 8045, Beretta's sole .45 ACP offering.
It is just as reliable, to me, as the 92 series. Always works and eats everything.
To me, the issue in concealing a Beretta of any series is the thickness, not the length of the grip. With the exception of the Compact L, Type M, Berettas are very thick, making concealment difficult.

My understanding is that it has been in Europe for some time. It looks like a good CCW. I imagine that FC 13 rd mags could be modified to fit it.

i love my mini 8000d. i dont really have a problem w/ the short grip; i just curl that pinky underneath and go.

my 8000 has been perfect, just like my 92 and 96. it is my favorite gun and makes a good CCW.

yes, i think the difference is the intermediate grip and different slide contour.

The Cougar L model is starting to show up. I have one on the way from Richardson's in Texas. They are at www.rgunsonline.com or you can email them at [email protected]

They should be aware of the L model because I kept bugging them, to make sure it really is the L they are sending me.
