After my recent bad experience with Kimber, I don't recommed Kimber at all!

I'd take a look at a Rock Island 1911 if I were you. I've got one of their "tactical" models, which is worth the extra $40 for the upgrades you get, and it makes a .45 caliber hole in whatever it's pointing at when I pull the trigger.

You are entitled to your opinion, but based upon that:

--My brand new in box EMP was a total POS; no Springfields for me.
--My Colt 1911 was an even bigger POS; no Colts for me.
--My four Kimbers have been flawless.

How do you think I voted?

Smith & Wesson 1911

I hear a lot of good things about S&W 1911s. Some serious 1911 owners I know really like them.

My Kimbers had to go back to the factory, and still didn't work right.
My Spingfields were good after some tweaking and break-in
My Colts ran perfectly right out of the box, no malfunctions to date.

So based on my experiences, Colt first, Springfield second, and Kimbers no thank you.

After all the Kimber bashing. I have decided to throw mine in the trash.
Save my money and buy a high dollar custom built 1911. I would give them away but I hate to burden someone with a piece of junk. I am the only person ever to have a problem with a Springfield , its the luck I have but still I am not lucky enough to win the lottery.
Since you do not want a high end custom pistol I would list the guns in this order: Colt,RIA,Plastic Air Soft,Plastic toy 1911 from K-Mart,Kimber & then Springfield. Let me add this to really get them going, I hate Glocks !!!!!!
Can you tell what kind of day I am having.:cuss::banghead:
Thanks for listening

well i love Glock:neener: but anyhoo.. it seems a reoccurring theme for colt to be in the lead followed by SA and A Very Close Kimber.

I put my vote for Springfield. I own 3 Springfields, all of which have been outstanding. I have had countless Kimber's and only one has ever worked well after break in, and it was great during the break in. As for colt, i have limited experience, so i reserve judgment, but I love my Gunsite 1911.

Make mine a COLT :)

Over the last 45 years I've owned just about every brand but always go back to Colt when it comes to 1911 style autos. These days all my 1911's are Colts. And no, I am not looking back! :D If I had to choose a runner up in a factory made 1911 it would be Springfield.

Provided all things equal (meaning they work), my favorite goes to the Kimber. As an all around company however... Springfield makes my favorite 1911 from the three makers, the PRO. But that's outta the price range. Strictly speaking mass production 1911s, I prefer Kimbers. IMO they feel the best in the hand, fit tighter and in my hands shoot a smidge straighter.

Colts are nice, but the slide to frame rattle bugs the bejeezus out of me. Yeah, it doesn't affect accuracy, and it doesn't make it any less of a gun... but it's a personal gripe.

yea i really like SA, I'm just Trying To Figure Out If MIM Is As Bad As Some imply... Is There A Chance Its Better?

I voted Springfield. While I have Kimbers, I just like them, I think that Springfield probably takes the lead slightly over Kimber or Colt.

They are all well mad firearms and each company will produce their fair share of lemmons.

Well, well -- after Black Majik's endorsement, I guess I won't throw my Kimbers in the trash bin after all ... Dare I admit that I secretly like my Kimbers? MIM and all ...

Keep this quiet, but I find myself in agreement with a post in a thread on 1911s by a gent going by the screen-name of glockman19 ... Oh, the irony ...

Of the choices, Kimber is head and shoulders above. MIM shmim - that topic is just fodder for front porch debates about nothing.

Not listed, but in the same price category are S&W and Para Ordnance. I noticed Rock Island Armory mentioned. Less money - perfect for entry level. High quality and a-b-s-o-l-u-t-e-l-y world-class customer service should you need it.

considered taurus? i'm looking at buying one, and am hearing nothing but good about them. The PT1911 is very reliable, dressed up, and all mil-spec. And mostly cheaper than the other guys.

I voted for Kimber before I finished reading the question. Then I read all of you guys' posts and it seems that you favor Colt and Springfield far and above Kimber. I guess I just don't have the experience you guys have. My experience has been that every handgun class I've attended, all the NRA defense trainers I've met, coworkers, friends, family, etc. have all given me the indication that nobody makes a factory 1911 close to the quality that Kimber does. One gun shop rep told me that he prefers Colt because their parts have a looser fit, and this keeps the gun cooler when he's at the range. He said the Kimbers are just too finely machined. That was still a plus for Kimber in my opinion. I'll have to take a serious look at the other two because if they are as good as you guys claim, I'm all for spending less money.

I don't know about the new colts, but I can tell you that the ones made in the 70s and above were pretty much hit and miss. It was not uncommon to get a new colt that was a jamomatic. They had the market cornered and they knew it. I bought several new colts that didn't work, had horrible triggers, untuned extractors, not throated. It was a given when you bought a colt back then, if you were serious about it working 100%, you gave it to a 1911 smith to get things right. I wouldn't buy a new colt on a dare, as their is so much competiontion now. You can buy a clone much cheaper and most that I've seen work out of the box. The Phillippine models are a real bargain.

My experience with Kimbers has been nearly all negative. They look really nice and well made but just aren't reliable. Colts aren't what they once were. I have several Springfields (Champion & Operator) and the only weak link I have encountered with them is the extractor, so I just replace it with a Wilson Bullet Proof extractor and no more problems. I have to agree with f4t9r the best are the Baers, and Browns.
