What is the best .223Rem powder? I need a 55gr FMJ load that will reliably cycle in an AR15. Thanks.

    IMR4895 and AA2230 also

On .223 there are so many good powders and enough guys doing it you can get up to speed quickly. Same on .308 (many are the same powders)

    Alway have a plan B, C & D powder now a days.

    giggitty,
I see you been on here pretty heavily. Stay off the net 24 hours prior to shooting new loads to let your eyes & brain rest. There is a lot of info to digest at first. I am enjoying your questions also.

For me, WW748, H335, and AA2460 have best written all over them. I have used the three mentioned to make my M193 equivalent ammo using bulk 55 grain FMJ BT bullets and CCI 450 primers.

Really hard to ever say "best" for any propellant... Way too many variables/criteria out there for what constitutes best for shooters. I will say I think ball propellants work "best" for me since I usually crank .223 ammo from my 550B, and I like the way it meters and its load density. Good luck and happy reloading!

None of the above. Tac, Varget, and H4895 are my go to powders in that order for 223 AR shootin.

Constructive feed back would have you buying and reading a couple of full size reloading manuals. They make the bullets so it makes sense that most if not all offer what the most accuracy potential is for a give bullet is with a certain powder. But, then it requires a reloader to actually make up a test rounds and hit the range to look for accuracy, reliability, and safety in their guns rather then trusting some internt schmuck!

Depends on the rifle and barrel length. I have an AR with a 16" barrel, and I find that H-322 works best with 55 gr. bullets. H-335 works best with the 75gr loads. I find Varget too slow for this barrel length.

IMR-4895 has given me very good accuracy out of my mini-14, right around 2" at 100 yards, 5 shots, but it doesn't deliver top velocity with the 55 grain bullets. H-4895 is almost as accurate, but pushes the bullet 100 fps faster. I'm kinda torn right now, I've only got 2 lbs of H-4895 and the 8lb keg's of that powder are impossible to find. I can get 8 lbs of IMR-4895 pretty easily. I don't guess the velocity is THAT important.:)

    Redneck,
I get torn like that also. I can use the 4895 in a Garand so I try to save it for that.

AA 2015 and reloader 10X are my top choices with 55 gr bullet. H335 will give best results with what you have listed. 2015 gives good velocity with 42 to 63 gr FMJ. It works well in my ranch rifle and my H&R single shot as well as my brothers AR. BTW the Lee manual lists many propellants in order of velocity and I find it handy. If you are going to buy one this is a good first book. Lee Modern Reloading II

I use 4198 for my 14 inch 223 Contender. Outstanding accuracy.
