Best 270 Winchester Rifle / Ammo

I'm considering my first bolt action rifle. All signs point toward 270 Winchester.

Please recommend a good rifle under $1000 (not including scope) and the best factory ammo.

Easy---Browning X-Bolt and Hornady 140gn loads.

You should also check the Tikka T3 in 270. Do a search on this site for plenty of info.

I'm sure you could search for "best bolt action" and find plenty of info, even if it wasn't a 270 caliber. You could get 12 different people giving you 10 different options in this thread. If you are spending up to $1,000 I'd guess you should go for a wood stock rifle with a floating barrel. Something nice to give to the kids.

For ammo, every gun is different. You'll have to find the ammo that works best for YOUR gun. That is my least favorite answer, but it is the "best" answer. I've got a 270 that I've only shot Remington Core-lokt ammo through. Next time I go to the range, I'll be comparing the Core-lokt ammo with Federal Fusion and Hornady SST to see what gives me the best results.

cz 550 will shoot any ammo better than anything else for under 1k.

I was at my local Walmart today and they had Weatherby Vanguards on clearance for $390. The one I saw had a sand colored stock. A lot less than $1000 and comes with a MOA gaurantee.

Edited to add: Any of the major factory ammunitions will be A-OK. I shoot the Hornady Custom 130gr SP, and my wife shoots Winchester PSP 130gr. Both work well, but we can't share ammo. My rifle hates hers and hers groups the cheap Win way better. Grab several different brands of ammo and see what works best.

$1K not including scope - I'd run with one of these:

-Sako 85
-Browning A-bolt (or X-bolt)
-Remington 700 CDL, or CDL SF
-Remington 700 Mountain LSS
-Remington 700 Alaskan Ti
-Weatherby Mark V
-Steyr Mannlicher or Pro-Hunter

My first choice would be either the Remington 700 ADL ($509*) or a Savage Model 116 Weather Warrior (Synthetic stock & SS barrel/action - $548*) or Model 114 Classic (if you prefer a great-looking walnut stock with black caps - $618*).

All of the above are tack-drivers and very carry-friendly.

Either could be totally set up w/mounts, rings & scope for $700 - $800 (depending on optics).


Ammo : Lots of choices!! Federal Fusion or Vital-Shok, Win. Ballistic Silver-Tip, etc.
