Friend got a Dakota and it wouldn't shoot worth anything until he had GA Precision re-bed it and replace the barrel. FWIW...

Good info. thanks; however that is a dissappointing thing to hear for a $5-6K rifle.

I am in the market and closing cautiously. For a 4 +/-1 K$ gun, what would you suggest for further review.

Yes. On their website. $3,585 for the Lapua model (sans scope, scope mount, tripod).

Under $4k, I would look at two choices:

    1. SAKO TRG-42

    2. Surgeon XL action built by GA Precision

In my opinion, there's not enough experience out there with the SRS to give it a recommendation yet. It certainly looks interesting. I am not a fan of bull-pup bolt-action rifles, however. That's the extent of my opinion on the SRS.

If brass/ammo prices are too steep in 338LM, look at the 338 RUM. It has virtually the same ballistics as the LM.

If your price range is 3 - 5k, a used AI-AWSM might fit. Retail on the basic 338LM model AI is now $5880 (2008 prices).

I've only shot the Armalite AR-30 and I thought it was incredibly accurate and had about as much recoil as a .243 when shot from the prone with the bipod and muzzle break.

If money is no object then look at the Vigilance Rifles website, you can get a semi auto .338 LM, .505 Gibbs or a .408 CheyTac rifle!

    http://www.vigilancerifles.com/

Don't pass up watching the videos on the website, you'll be amazed at the lack of recoil.

That looks like Mark Serbu, the maker. Probably just function-firing the weapon.

Get the most expensive one. Although I wouldn't particularly want a semi auto. If you can get one that has the words "tactical, recon, sniper, scout, or special" in the name, that would add a few points.

Ain't America great? We are such a wealthy nation that we can want something just to have it.

Ron, what are you going to use it for? I would suggest that you call Zak Smith on the phone and talk to someone knowledgable about what might suit you.

Doesn't Bushmaster have a .338 AR variant? It may not have been released yet though.
