What is the best powder for a 180gr .40SW load? I need it to be able to function in a semi-auto pistol and be sufficient for practice ammo.

I am using 5.2g of W231 with my 180g bullets. I shoot an M&P. Have loaded and fired several thousand rounds without a failure to eject or any other jam.

    giggity,

I've tried several powders for light to moderate target loads for the .40. I have found these to work well in my CZ, but may not work in your particular pistol:

    3.0 gns VVN310, 170 LSWC, 1.125" OAL
3.0 gns Bullseye, same as above
3.5 gns WW231, same as above. The targets below are WW231. The one on the right has 7 rounds in 1.25" and is a "best". The target on the left is a "typical" @ 25 yards; 9 rounds in about 2.0". These are very light and easy to shoot well.

The best powder for the 40 S&W is the powder that always goes BANG when you pull the trigger...go buy a reloading manual.

Schmeky--3.0 grains of Bullseye??? Good Lord, man, that's one bunny fart load if I've ever seen one! <g>

I use 4.9 grains of Bullseye under Montana Gold 180s. She makes "Major" by a long shot.

I too like 4.9gr of Bullseye but on a 180gr Rainier HP or FP. 4.2gr of Titegroup on the same bullet is almost as good.

Power Pistol, it was made explicitly for the 40, 9mm, & 10mm.

Unique, Universal, or Longshot, all three are sweet in 40 cal.

    My Load

a little over 8 gr of AL-5 topped with a 180 JHP, or most any 18o gr . Clean accurate, reliable. But I agree with many of the rplies, you really need to get a good reference and try the loads in your own firearms and log the results. Any of the combinations will produce good results in some guns, but probably not all. Good luck
