Best blueing remover?

If I want to reblue an old rough looking SKS, what is a good product to use for removing the old blueing?

I've used Naval Jelly. Worked well for me, but I'm sure there are other products.

Are you going to polish, bead, or grit blast or just apply new blue over the surface as is?
Any sort of abrasive prep will remove the old blue.

I've used Birchwood Casey. . . it worked.

Evaporust works amazingly well. Parts coming out of Evaporust bath look like they're right off the assembly line, in the white.

u can steam the gun and convert the rust to black oxide to make the bluing quicker. muriatic acid and water is easy and quick.

I soak in cleaning vinegar. It takes off the bluing and converts rust at the same time.

Edit to say soak instead of speak.

I tried toilet bowl cleaner, it worked pretty good. I will do another application of the stuff tomorrow before cleaning with denatured alcohol and then apply the new blueing.

for u guys using acids use white vinegar to clean your hands.

I've used Naval Jelly.

Naval Jelly if you want the blueing taken off fast. A bath in vinegar if you want it to work more slowly. If you leave the Navel Jelly on too long, it will start to etch the surface.

I have used vinegar to take the blue off the cylinders of a couple of Walker replicas. Inexpensive and worked very well.

I have heard of using vinegar to age a blued finish on reproduction revolvers.

If you cut it and use it sparingly maybe. I just soaked the cylinders in a vinegar bath for 10 minutes or so.

Muriatic Acid works fast, but increases polishing time.
