If you start with a Springfield GI, you can make it what you want.

This was done for looks, but once I was done with it, it runs perfectly.

Honestly, any of the major production 1911s will put out a quality 1911 that's suitable for competition. There isn't really a "best" 1911 for competition when it comes to production 1911s. You should choose which features you want on it and go from there.

Adjustable sights might be preferrable, since you can adjust POI depending on what load you use in your gun.

Kimber, Springfield, Colt, Dan Wesson, Smith and Wesson... all should do you quite well.

Good luck!

Johndoe - that was a very informative post, thank you! What you said makes sense. i do need to go fondle a bunch of them and see what differences I like/dislike. It's always hard to shop for an expensive gun with a cheap price range, but hopefully I'll get a good one.

thanks to everyone for your help. I forsee a couple of gun shows and several gun store visits in my near future

Just glad I could help. :) Like I said, it took me a lot of trial and error to decide what I really liked. I really noticed that just the other day with my mil spec. I didn't really like the gun at all until I swapped the MSH from arched to flat and put a long trigger on instead of the short trigger. HUGE difference for $70.

I would have to disagree with the GI comment though unless you really like straight serrations. The milspec has lowered and flared ejection port (sounds like an expensive mod to me) plus a beveled magwell (cheap DIY mod). There's a couple of other advantages on the milspec vs the GI but if you want the GI slide look (straight vs angled serrations) then by all means, get the GI. I have a buddy that wishes he had started with a milspec over a GI for competition purposes.

A loaded SA is a good start as well. Not to forget the rest of the great manufacturers already mentioned (SW, Kimber, DW, Colt, Baer etc).
