Best hunting 22LR ammo?

At close ranges, like 70 yards or so and closer, stingers work pretty well. Past that, cci standard velocity solids. I shoot the standard velocity more than anything else. I usually target shoot at beyond 100 yards.

The Winchester has given some guys problems, one here even had a rim blow off and blow off his extractor. I have some and it's not ammo I would not use it in old guns. Accuracy is what matters, but my first pick is cci velocitor 40grain hp more power then the stingers, 2nd is cci i mag 36grain hp. use what shoots good

It partially depends on your quarry and what you plan on doing with it.
Hornady makes a 30 gr. load with the plastic tip to aid expansion. This makes it an effective round for varmints where all you want to do is eliminate them. If you don't want the additional cost, try taking the usual HP ammo (36-38 gr.) and a razor blade or very sharp knife and cut a "+" in the top of the bullet. This usually causes the bullet to fragment on impact and tear up the insides along multiple tracks.
Regular HPs or solids are better for fur-bearers where you want the pelt or for the meat. Even the 36-38 gr. HPs from various manufacturers don't expand that much (normally) and tear up the meat. Solids are even better at not tearing up the meat but over-penetration could be a problem.

what are you hunting, squirrel, woodchucks, rabbits, other? likely depends on if you are simply dispatching or looking for edibles to remain.

I am big on shooting whatever .22 LR I can find. However the winchester 40 grain loads have not shot well in anything I have tried them in. For accuracy in a normal load CCI Mini Mags have been great. Also ha e a bunch of federal champion standard velocity loads that shoot well for me.

I am going to claim that standard velocity 22 lr is all you need for squirrels. I had one 50 yard shot, the squirrel was in the top of the highest tree in the Glenn and I had to lay down on my back and shoot in an awkward position to hit him. A 25 yard shot is exceptional, most shots were closer to 15 yards. And this is all due to the thickness of woods. Given the range limitations, I much preferred quiet rounds. The standard target 22lr standard velocity makes a lot less noise than any of the super speed thunder bolt and lighting stuff. And, in well hunted woods, the squirrels are wise, and stay put when they hear noises. Quiet is much the better hunting round.

For small game hunting and varmints, I like the Winchester 40 grain Dynapoints. They are like a small semi wad cutter and have great knock down power and good penetration.

I've found CCI MiniMags to be the best compromise between price and accuracy. I can get 40 gr solids or 36 gr HP for around $8/100. The cheaper stuff isn't accurate enough to make me happy. The more expensive stuff is only a little more accurate in my rifles. It doesn't take anything special to kill small game so I tend to use what is the most accurate.

Federal has a loading that comes in a 1100 round Black Pack. 38 gr. Copper plated hollow point. 1260 fps.

What ever is the most accurate in your gun, CCI standard shoots well in my Ruger Standard and Marlin 60, Federal Auto Match seems to do best in the S&W 17 for me.

I really like Remington subsonics for squirrel and rabbit hunting. Accurate, very quiet, and don’t make to much of a mess. For woodchucks and everything else I shoot CCI stingers.

I use Remington GB HP's for everything, plinking and small game. I refuse to use anything that doesn't expand. For a subsonic (rifles) hollowpoint that expands I like the Norma load.

I have over forty 22lr rifles. When ever I buy another I take a 100 round plastic 22lr ammo container and i load each row with different brands and different types of bullets.
Then I take the rifle and shoot targets from a rest and see what type and grain bullet each gun likes and that is what I use in that gun.
I use the dividers that are in the 30 packs of Budweiser for targets and write down what each little dot was shot with so I can compare the results.
I buy 22 ammo every payday. Mostly the volume packs, but some times I will switch it up and buy 50 or 100 round packs of bullets.

What a cool post. Very revealing.

OT...I know this is a .22 thread, but your Rem 788 shoots EVERYTHING well! I had one too! Miss that gun...

sorry for the OT

As far as .22 goes, I prefer 40 gr CCI MiniMags for almost every .22 hunting scenario

I use sk plus or wolf (I thought someone said they were the same) for squirrels. They shoot very well in my cz and 10/22's. I use blazer or auto match for plinking.
